LiquidPiston, Inc. is a technology startup reinventing the internal combustion engine based on a patented thermodynamic cycle and novel rotary architecture. Responsibilities
- Design key engine components including pistons, rods, crankshafts, rotors, and housings.
- Develop CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks (preferred) or similar tools.
- Conduct structural and thermal Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate component integrity.
- Support prototype builds by collaborating with assembly technicians and manufacturing partners.
- Apply best practices in engine assembly processes and documentation.
- Participate in design reviews, failure analysis, and test result interpretation.
- Integrate feedback from testing and validation into iterative design improvements.
- Ensure alignment with DFM/DFA principles for smooth transition to production.
- Cook with cross-functional teams (manufacturing, testing, controls, and quality) to achieve performance goals and meet development timelines.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Expert with demonstrated ability to conduct advanced CFD simulations for combustion, flow, and thermal analysis.
- Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred; CATIA, NX, or similar acceptable).
- Experience with engine prototype development and validation practices.
- Familiarity with engine assembly techniques and processes.
- Strong knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
- Understanding of engine design standards and best practices.
- Proven ability to work in cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Familiarity with machining processes and manufacturing requirements.
- Proficient in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and metrology tools.
- Good foundation in materials science and selection for high-performance engine parts.
- Knowledge of vibration analysis and NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) principles.
- Experience in lubrication system design, oil flow, and bearing analysis.
- Understanding of cooling system design and thermal management principles.
- Exposure to intake and exhaust system design.
- Experience with engine dynamometer testing and data interpretation.
