About the role

Gibraltar is seeking an experienced Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) to lead all field safety efforts on active construction projects, including federal design-build work.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the designated SSHO for construction projects, including federal design-build projects
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve the Field Safety Program, Safety Manual, Accident Prevention Plan (APP), and Job Safety Plan (JSP) templates
  • Ensure full compliance with OSHA standards, including 29 CFR 1926, and all contract safety requirements
  • Maintain authority to stop work for unsafe conditions or practices
  • Write, review, and manage project-specific Job Safety Plans (JSPs) and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) for all scopes of work, including high-risk activities
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foremen to ensure safety plans reflect actual field conditions and sequencing
  • Ensure JSPs and JSAs are communicated, reviewed, and understood by all field crews prior to work execution
  • Conduct regular job site safety inspections to identify hazards and verify compliance
  • Monitor construction activities involving heavy equipment, excavation, steel erection, welding, confined space entry, fall protection, and work at height
  • Maintain a strong field presence to coach safe behaviors and reinforce safety expectations
  • Lead all incident, near-miss, and hazard investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action implementation
  • Track safety metrics, analyze trends, and prepare reports for project leadership and senior management
  • Develop and deliver field safety training, including toolbox talks, safety meetings, and safety committee activities
  • Serve as the primary safety representative during OSHA inspections, client audits, and insurance reviews

Requirements

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of construction safety experience, including experience serving as an SSHO
  • Prior experience as SSHO on at least two (2) federal design-build projects, each with a construction value of $5 million or more
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards, including 29 CFR 1926
  • Proven ability to write and manage Job Safety Plans (JSPs) and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs)
  • In-depth understanding of construction hazards and risk mitigation strategies
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and reporting abilities
  • Ability to influence safety culture and behavior without direct authority
  • Comfortable working outdoors in active construction environments and traveling between job sites
  • Ability to be on-site full-time during active construction operations
