Site Engineer II

About the role

The Site Engineer II is a contributing member of the site‑level Data Center Operations team, assigned to one or more Digital Realty data center properties and reporting directly to the Manager, Engineering Operations. The role requires experience with mission‑critical infrastructure—including generators, UPS systems, HVAC systems, fire/life‑safety systems, BMS systems, and CMMS—and expertise in either electrical or mechanical work with competence in the non‑primary discipline.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to daily site operations, including creation and modification of site operating procedures.
• Create change‑management tickets, develop Method of Procedures (MOPs) for low‑risk preventative maintenance, and oversee their execution.
• Generate timely incident reports and manage incident reporting procedures.
• Perform site maintenance, repairs, and inspections to maintain the highest level of data‑center availability.
• Develop, edit, and close change‑management work orders in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Supervise construction activity and installations as required.
• Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems on site without immediate supervision.
• Conduct rounds/inspections efficiently, detecting and reporting anomalies.
• Develop or improve standard operating procedures (SOPs) for site‑specific equipment.
• Maintain a complete understanding of facility layout, MEP systems, equipment nomenclature, drawings, specifications, and sequence‑of‑operations documents.
• Interpret and apply customer SLAs, lease obligations, and the top 20 emergency operating procedures (EOPs).
• Manage BMS alarm functionality, escalation, acknowledgment, and data trend extraction.
• Support accreditation initiatives such as SSAE‑16, SOC 2, ISO 27001, and complete DLR Critical Awareness Training.
• Uphold Digital Realty’s Environmental, Occupational Health, and Safety standards.

Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years experience in mission‑critical facilities operations/engineering or equivalent equipment experience (UPS, HVAC, generators, fire/life‑safety systems).
• Hands‑on electrical or mechanical skill with competence in the non‑primary discipline.
• Strong knowledge of various UPS architectures and cooling system designs.
• Understanding of infrastructure redundancy configurations (N+1, 2N, ATS/STS, fail‑over scenarios) and associated risks.
• Knowledge of energy‑efficiency principles.
• Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills; ability to respond effectively in writing and verbally to sensitive or complex issues.
• Detail‑oriented with strong organizational abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook; familiarity with Microsoft Project, Adobe Acrobat, Visio or AutoCAD.
• Basic understanding of emergency situations and escalation processes.
• Strong understanding of CMMS, Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM), and power‑metering systems.

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift and handle up to 50 lb.
• Bend, stoop, and stretch as required for placement and retrieval of network devices, materials, or equipment.
• Work under a raised data‑center floor.
• Climb ladders up to 16 ft to reach plenum spaces.
