Range: $50,761-$92,279 annually with employer-paid retirement, dependent upon previous experience. 9-month salaried position (185/189 days).

About the Role

The special education teacher is responsible for establishing teaching strategies that are goal-oriented and based on proven instructional techniques designed to benefit students with disabilities within a comprehensive life skills program. Instruction relates to functional curriculum domains: domestic, vocational, recreational, community, and functional academics. This position adheres to the LCSD Professional Standards for Licensed Employees and reports directly to the school site administrator.

Responsibilities

• Follow mandated compliance standards established by federal, state, or district regulations for program development and implementation.
• Maintain appropriate student records and submit required reports within designated time limits.
• Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations upon review of confidential special education documents.
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding records and information obtained during professional service.
• Demonstrate acceptable command of the English language in written and oral communication.
• Carry out clerical duties such as attendance, budgeting of materials, and recording of grades promptly and accurately.
• Attend and participate in all required training.
• Manage and assign support staff, such as paraprofessionals, as necessary.
• Maintain accurate and timely records in PowerSchool.
• Provide instruction related to functional curriculum domains: domestic, vocational, recreational, community, and functional academics.
• Utilize research-based instructional methods and materials (e.g., general education curriculum, Edmark, TouchMath, FACTER, LCCE, Syracuse).
• Provide meaningful, relevant activities for instruction in natural settings (e.g., regular education classroom, community-based).
• Ensure age-appropriate instructional materials and tasks are used, with differentiated and/or multi-leveled instruction.
• Ensure standards-based instruction and appropriate student assessments (e.g., state alternate assessment).
• Use instructional adaptations to support student learning (e.g., picture cues, student grouping, cooperative learning, sign language, individualized schedules).
• Teach functional communication skills and provide individualized communication tools (e.g., picture cards, picture display boards, picture schedules, sign language, voice output electronic devices, consequence maps).
• Address student behaviors individually through positive behavioral supports, support plans, or appropriate goals and objectives.
• Monitor student progress through regular data collection and adjust individual plans as needed via annual IEP meetings or more frequently if appropriate.
• Demonstrate knowledge, skill, and ability to provide instruction in an elementary classroom.
• Work cooperatively with students, parents, peers, administration, and community members.
• Guide the learning process toward achievement of curriculum and student goals.
• Establish and communicate clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques and strategies aligned with instructional objectives to meet the needs of all students.
• Participate as a collaborative member with other faculty and staff.
• Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and district policy.
• Maintain and improve professional competence through continued education and in-service training.
• Communicate professionally and effectively in written, oral, and non-verbal terms.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the site administrator/supervisor.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university; Master’s Degree preferred.
• Experience working in an educational setting in special education preferred.
• Must possess or be able to acquire a Nevada teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education, certified in the relevant subject area.

Physical and Mental Requirements

• Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use a keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods.
• Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, and stand for long periods of time.
• Dexterity and coordination to handle files, single pieces of paper, and occasional lifting of files, stacks of paper, or reports.
• Some reaching for items above and below waist and head level, including bending, squatting, and stooping to assist students.
• Manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate educational technology (e.g., LCD projector, SmartBoard, iPads/Tablets, augmentative communication devices).
• Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds or 1/3 body weight, whichever is greater, to waist height, perform a 2 to 3 person lift, and restrain student(s) as needed in accordance with state regulations.

Working Conditions

• Exposure to climate-controlled classroom settings to outside weather with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat.
