About the role
The role involves assisting surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses in the care of patients in the Operating Room under the direction of a Physician or Registered Nurse.
Responsibilities
- Maintain knowledge and practice of aseptic technique.
- Assists the circulating nurse in the preparation of surgical procedures and during room turnovers between procedures.
- Prepares sterile field for surgical procedures, ensuring proper instruments and supplies are available for use.
- During the surgical procedure:
- Anticipate needs for surgeon and pass instruments and supplies;
- Function as assistant, when needed;
- Obtain counts with circulating nurse;
- Care for specimens according to procedure;
- Maintain proper care of instruments and supplies when procedure is finished.
- Maintains equipment, supplies and environmental safety.
- Maintains knowledge of current trends in surgical procedures and instrumentation.
- Maintains standards by participating in in-services, committees, etc.
- Decontaminating and preparation for sterilization of instruments utilized during surgical cases.
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
Requirements
- Current BLS certification.
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Scrub tech program or at least 2 years’ experience working as a scrub tech.
- A high school diploma or GED.
- Formal aseptic technique training.
- Computer skills including word processing, databases, and e-mail.
- Excellent verbal and communication skills.

- Knowledge of current trends in surgical procedures and instrumentation.
- Ability to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
