Sign Language Interpreter, Special Education

Shakopee High School is seeking a Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate communication among deaf or hard-of-hearing students, their peers, classroom teachers, and other personnel, ensuring active participation in the educational program.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with DHH teacher, case managers, classroom teams, and support services to ensure student needs are met.
• Assist in planning and implementing students' daily programs under the direction of the Supervisor, case manager, and classroom teacher.
• Prepare learning environments, materials, and supplies for assigned students or classrooms.
• Participate in staff meetings, training programs, and conferences for professional development.
• Maintain positive, professional relationships with students, staff, and families.
• Use positive, professional written communication with all individuals.
• Ensure regular, prompt attendance.
• Provide in-class interpretation and/or transliteration services using sign language for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in classes and school activities.
• Assess student needs and interpreting situations throughout the day, making adjustments as needed.
• Interpret student contributions, reports, or discussions to instructors, classes, staff, and peers.
• Assist with communication needs, including adjusting lighting, seating, visual aids, and specialized equipment.
• Perform other duties such as tutoring, participating in meetings, and contributing as an active member of the educational team when not interpreting.

Requirements

• Fluency in ASL and English, with a high level of proficiency in both.
• Demonstrated proficiency in interpreting skills, including accuracy, clarity, and cultural sensitivity.
• Bachelor’s degree in interpretation or a related field (preferred).
• Certification in expressive and receptive sign language interpreting (NAD/ACCI, EIPA, or RID required; Provisional Certificate required).
• At least one year of experience in educational or related settings (beneficial).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Effective problem-solving skills for challenges during interpreting sessions.
• Strong understanding of deaf culture and the needs of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Schedule

• 7:45 am – 3:15 pm, Monday–Friday, following the school calendar.

Pay

Pay range: $25 to $38.50 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
