About the role
Reporting to the Executive Editor, The World and Local Productions, the Show Editor/Producer has a leading dual role responsible for shaping The World’s editorial output - the overall shape and sound of the show. They are a standard-bearer in the newsroom, committed to innovative journalism and the highest standards of editorial integrity, actively seeking out and promoting diverse, new voices, ensuring that multi-media opportunities are maximized and that digital activities are integrated into the broadcast in fresh ways.
Responsibilities
- Share the responsibility to lead the daily production process, providing editorial guidance and leadership to the production team, and assist with preparing content for the live broadcast, including scripting host intros, tags, and promotional materials.
- Commission and edit stories from reporters and producers, and craft content in creative and distinct ways that help The World stand out on public radio.
- Write and edit promotional copy for digital distribution (e.g. Content Depot).
- Place items in the program to ensure coherence and, reflecting the mission of the broadcast.
- Collaborate with editors to ensure that future coverage meets the program’s needs and is appropriate.
- Collaborate with the digital team to develop content for web, social, and other digital platforms.
- Provide mentorship and feedback to producers and reporters to encourage and cultivate new voices guiding their storytelling to be more ambitious.
- Pitch, develop, and produce compelling segments and long-form features on global news and international affairs.
- Serve as an editor on assigned segments, guiding reporters and hosts in shaping scripts, ensuring journalistic rigor, and optimizing pieces for clarity, flow, and narrative impact within the constraints of public radio.
- Fact-check, verify, and maintain the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance across all assigned stories and edits.
- Understand and navigate the unique co-production structure, ensuring effective communication and alignment of editorial decisions and production standards between GBH and PRX teams.
- Work closely with the Supervising Producer, editors, producers, hosts, reporters, and the digital team to ensure a cohesive and strategic approach to content development across all platforms (broadcast, digital, social).
- Maintain strict adherence to daily production deadlines and contribute to the smooth operation of the program's editorial workflow.
- Potentially guide junior producers or interns on best practices for audio production and global news reporting.

They write precisely and clearly, as quickly as the news breaks and with compassion and humor to set the right tone for the show. They are well-suited to creating and delivering distinct and engaging coverage, and for pushing the boundaries of global storytelling. They embrace the ever-changing media landscape and are responsive to the public radio station marketplace tapping into their knowledge of international news and curiosity about events and people that drive the news in all regions of the globe. They must know radio production and be able to provide guidance on conducting interviews and the creative use of audio.
Skills
- Demonstrated expertise in radio production and editing
- A strong understanding of international affairs
- Experience managing reporters, editors, or other content creators and developing new talent
- An ability to meet strict deadlines and multi-task with ease
- An ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with all members of staff, while making a positive contribution to a newsroom culture that values respect, diversity and high expectations
- An audience-first orientation. Can understand the needs and experiences of the show’s audience to continuously improve their work
- Experience in exercising news judgment at the highest level and the ability to generate original ideas
- Experience in leading change and innovation
- Ability to work collaboratively in high pressure, deadline driven environments
- A deep understanding of the public radio system and its needs
- Exceptional audio editing skills using professional-grade software (e.g., Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, or equivalent)
- Strong narrative storytelling skills and the ability to find and execute compelling stories within a tight deadline structure
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a geographically diverse team
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent work experience. Relevant post-graduate qualification preferred. 5-7 years of experience in broadcast news productions/editorial. Minimum 2-3 years experience managing a team.
Job specifics
- The role requires occasional evening or weekend work during major news events or special projects.

Salary Range
$81,400 - $107,400
Compensation
Compensation offered within this range is determined by skills, experience and internal pay equity.
