Short Term Substitute - Social Studies Teacher - Horizon Community Middle School

About the role

Provide instruction and manage a classroom in the regular teacher's absence, following provided lesson plans, managing student behavior, taking attendance, and ensuring a safe learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students in large, small, and one-on-one situations (50% of time).
  • Create a classroom environment that maximizes instructional opportunity, supervise the behavior and well-being of students in the classroom and all educational settings, and administer discipline when appropriate (25% of time).
  • Collaborate with teachers, support personnel, administrators, and colleagues to enhance instruction and improve student outcomes (20% of time).
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested (5% of time).

Requirements

  • High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma.
  • Colorado Department of Education (CDE) substitute authorization or teaching license.
  • Basic knowledge of typical office equipment such as telephones, copiers, fax machines, email, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Basic classroom management and planning skills.
  • Basic organizational skills.
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication and interpersonal relations skills.
  • Ability to support programs designed to increase student achievement.
  • Ability and desire to work as a team member.
  • Ability to understand, appreciate, and make accommodations for student diversity.
  • Criminal background check and fingerprinting required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Previous successful teaching experience.
  • Experience working in the public sector.
  • Experience advising school clubs/co-curricular activities.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Racially conscious and culturally competent with the skill, will, capacity, and knowledge to commit to a culture of continuous improvement.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Light work strength level (lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds).
  • Primarily works indoors in a normal classroom and school district environment.
  • Typically a moderate noise level.
  • Prolonged standing and walking.
  • Frequent bending and reaching.
  • Occasional lifting, pulling, and pushing.
  • Speaking and hearing.
  • Visual concentration.
  • Eye/hand coordination.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard.
  • Concentrated reading/writing/mathematics.
  • May work outdoors when monitoring student activities.
  • Work location is subject to change to meet the requirements of the organization.
