Shop Mechanic II
About the role
Maintain the operations and appearance of Mastec Renewables equipment including assessment, diagnosis, replacement, and repair. Provide subject matter expertise to other Shop Mechanics.
Responsibilities
- Properly complete a JHA prior to any work function that poses a potential of injury
- Operate equipment to diagnose problems and inspect equipment for defects
- Maintain proper record keeping through the work order app
- DOT Issues: verify USDOT annual inspections in trucks and on file in office
- Equipment safety (i.e., backup alarms, lights, seat belts, fire extinguishers, rigging, etc.)
- Show expertise in all basic and complex machines, including crane safety (anti two blocks, rigging, crane maintenance daily logbook/annual inspection, etc)
- Perform work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards
- Accurately diagnose symptoms of all equipment systems including but not limited to hydraulic, electrical, HVAC, powertrain, drivetrain, etc.
- Effectively communicate to obtain needed parts
- Document all work performed and recommended on the repair order
- Test vehicles and machinery when required
- Keep shop area neat and clean
- Understand, keep abreast of, and comply with federal, state and local regulations such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know, etc.
- Operate all tools and equipment in a safe manner
- Report any safety issues immediately to management
Qualifications
- Certificate from college or technical school in Diesel or Automotive Technology preferred
- Three to five years relevant experience
- One or more of the following certifications: Electrical diagnostics and repair cert, A/C system diagnostics and repair cert, Welding Certification, OEM certification (JD Tech, CAT Tech, Case IH Tech, Komatsu Tech, Ford, Kenworth, Liebherr), etc. preferred
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Take reasonable care of your own and others’ health and safety and of those who may be affected by the day-to-day delivery of this role by taking personal responsibility for working toward Zero Injury principles
- Read schematics
- Complete all aspects of Original Equipment Manufacturer recommended services for engine, transmission, and hydraulic systems on construction equipment and vehicles
- Diagnose complex problems in systems including mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical
- Supervise and coordinate the work of a 3rd party mechanic
- Track and maintain records of completed work and update status of open work orders
- Strong problem-solving skills

- Complete scheduled maintenance tasks including but not limited to: wheel and tire changes, cutting edge replacement, DOT inspections, services
- Identify and request parts and complete repairs using OEM manuals
- Use digital systems such as email, phone/tablet for inspections and photos, time tracking application, digital OEM manuals
- Willingness to learn
- Work efficiently, independently and follow through on assignments
Physical Demands
When visiting jobsites the work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. This work environment may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises. Regularly exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock. Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
