Shipyard Production Worker

Reports to: Foreman/Superintendent • FLSA Status: Non-Exempt • Full Time • Location: Customer facilities, Shipyards – Chesapeake, VA

About the role

The Shipyard Production Worker participates in abrasive and non-abrasive removal of coatings systems and paint from surfaces using power and non-powered hand tools; cleans work areas to maintain a safe environment; prepares work areas prior to work and breaks down setups afterward. Performs duties as Fire Watch during hot work operations to ensure safety and prevent fires. Assists in the application of new coatings systems and paint using brushes, rollers, and other hand-held equipment. Sets up and breaks down equipment in a shipyard environment, including within drydocks and aboard vessels, performing cleaning, housekeeping, loading materials, moving supplies, setting up containments, and monitoring equipment for safe operation. Work is primarily performed on U.S. Navy Ships and Submarines.

Responsibilities

• Prepare job work sites and collaborate with team members to achieve daily goals.
• Assist spray painters, blasters, and other team members in pulling lines before, during, and after operations.
• Clean tanks and other spaces as directed using prescribed methods, including manual cleaning or debris removal equipment such as vacuum systems.
• Operate pneumatic, electric, and other powered and non-powered hand tools.
• Use cleaning agents, pressure washers, industrial vacuums, hoses, mops, brooms, brushes, and other cleaning equipment.
• Prepare surfaces for coating according to paint manufacturers' specifications.
• Mix paints as directed and apply coatings using approved methods.
• Move materials, supplies, tools, and equipment manually or using dollies, hand trucks, carts, and other material-handling equipment.
• Dispose of empty paint and solvent cans according to safety standards and store paint and solvents with appropriate precautions.
• Monitor hot work operations and maintain compliance with all hot work permit requirements.
• Keep work areas clear of combustible materials, obstacles, and other hazards; identify fire hazards and respond to unsafe conditions.
• Attempt to extinguish fires in the incipient stage using approved firefighting equipment and alert personnel when a fire exceeds this stage.
• Sort and grade materials, scrap, and salvageable items.
• Set up and break down equipment as directed; clean and maintain work areas and equipment in a neat, orderly fashion.
• Remove trash, debris, and collect reusable scrap materials.
• Remove and install items such as zinc anodes, lead, or other materials as prescribed.
• Assist in the removal and installation of cables aboard vessels, ensuring safe installation without damaging cables.
• Work with hand and power tools used in basic carpentry.
• Operate support material-handling equipment, including forklifts.
• Assemble and disassemble containments.
• Assist teams applying other applications to steel work and support structural trades personnel during metal work, welding, or related activities.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• One (1) year of maritime, industrial, cleaning, or labor experience preferred.
• OSHA-10 certification (company may provide).
• Forklift certification (company may provide).
• Firewatch certification required or obtainable through company training.

Working Conditions

• Regular exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, weather conditions, hazardous machinery, heights, confined spaces, and other industrial environments.
• Ability to stand, kneel, bend, twist, squat, and perform repetitive physical tasks for extended periods.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds or more (50 lbs occasionally, 25 lbs frequently, 10 lbs continuously).
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including respirators, harnesses, and other safety gear.

Pay

$20.00–$21.00 per hour, DOE.
