About the Role
The Shipper / Packer provides technical guidance on preservation, packaging, and packing matters, including processing criteria, procedures, and techniques.
Responsibilities
- Resolves complex problems related to preservation, packaging, and marking methods.
- Blocks and braces a wide variety of military equipment and supplies.
- Studies and analyzes packaging programs to ensure effectiveness and implements changes in methods, requirements, and procedures.
- Establishes packaging standard operating procedures for employees.
- Ensures employees receive updates on packaging regulations, including hazardous packaging requirements.
- Reviews packaging discrepancies and recommends corrective actions.
- Recommends preservation methods when guidance is unavailable from data systems.
- Researches technical, performance, environmental, and cost data on packing materials.
- Reads specifications and photographs as required in DLA contracts.
- Completes formal training on packing and shipping hazardous materials every two years.
- Utilizes management policies and automated systems (e.g., DSS, HMIRS, FEDLOG, FLOS, JHCS) to apply and interpret packaging guidelines.
- Applies analytical methods to identify packing problems and recommend solutions.
- Analyzes diverse data to determine trends and recommend courses of action.
- Stays updated on new developments in packaging and preservation to ensure process efficiency.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum one year of experience in material handling, supply, distribution, inspection, or related areas.
- One year of experience using woodshop tools, fabricating containers, framing construction, or preservation, packing, and packaging.
- Experience reading blueprints and measuring for fabrication.
- Ability to identify materials for wood container construction.
Skills
- Skill in operating materials handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, tugs, stock selectors).
- Proficient with Microsoft Suite products (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook).
- Ability to work effectively in a team and under minimal supervision.
- Strong multitasking skills in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
Physical Demands
- Occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands/fingers, reach, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, talk, hear, taste, or smell.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Work involves repetitive motions and standing for long periods.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs overhead and/or repetitively.
- Occasional outside work in hot, cold, or wet weather.
Work Environment
Works in a shop/warehouse environment with physical demands and occasional exposure to outdoor conditions.
