Shipfitter J1 - J4 (DAYSHIFT)

About the role

General Dynamics NASSCO, a member of the General Dynamics Marine Systems business unit, specializes in ship construction, advanced ship repair, conversion, and maintenance for commercial and national defense assets. The Shipfitter J‑4 position is located in Norfolk, Virginia, with five openings on 1st shift. Candidates must be able to obtain DBIDS and NAVSEA badges to access Navy installations and other shipyards; the role does not require a security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Plan and complete work with little supervision using blueprints.
• Demonstrate knowledge of layout for plates, pipes, and structural shapes, including flat layouts and complex layouts involving projection and compound angles.
• Apply ship‑related nomenclature to locate structures relative to frames, longitudinal stringers, centerlines, etc.
• Interpret weld symbols and apply them to material preparation for welding.

Skills

• Tack welding and burning.
• Operation of various power tools such as shears, saws, presses, etc.
• Making templates for fabrications and/or installation of ship structures.
• Assembling foundations, deck houses, and specialized structures for all areas of the ship.
• Knowledge of 5S guidelines and standard items.

Schedule

1st shift: 6:00 AM to 2:45 PM (includes a 45‑minute lunch break).
