Shift Team Lead

About the role

The Shift Team Lead position at the El Segundo Refinery involves managing 24/7 operations, including coordinating, directing, and executing all operations in an assigned division. This role prioritizes resources and work, executes daily operating plans to drive profitability, coordinates with other operating areas, and manages safety, environmental, plant utilization, and reliability performance in accordance with procedures, company policies, and refinery rules.

Responsibilities

• Operational Coordination: Supervises, coordinates, and directs activities of assigned units, facilities, and related equipment on shift according to operating plans and instructions; sets clear expectations, aligns teams with shared goals, ensures progress, removes barriers, communicates transparently, empowers decision‑making, identifies important data, and provides prompt status updates to leadership.
• Emergency Response: Takes action in unusual or emergency situations to correct adverse conditions, advises affected parties, and ensures process safety understanding and management by the crew.
• Maintenance Supervision: Supervises removal of equipment from service, preparation and cleanup for maintenance work, and return to service; ensures adherence to permitting and lock‑out, tag‑out processes.
• Preventative Maintenance: Directs crew in carrying out a continuous program of service and preventative maintenance; ensures crew displays high competencies and operational discipline.
• Resource Management: Assures economical use of utilities, materials, tools, operating services, and supplies; recommends process improvements for lower costs, greater profitability, better productivity, and higher performance.
• Leadership: Exhibits strong leadership behaviors in decision‑making, health, safety and environmental outcomes, and communication; leads by example, takes responsibility for outcomes, fosters positive relationships and inclusive treatment, manages payroll and performance feedback for the team.
• Safety and Compliance: Enforces all safety and fire prevention rules, ensures proper and safe operation of equipment, reports unsafe conditions, investigates operating upsets and mishaps, and prepares appropriate reports.
• Additional items: Conducts special studies, assists technical staff with field studies, test runs, and supports updating of operating standards and emergency procedures; facilitates daily operational and other meetings.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• A minimum of 10 years' experience in refining operations, or 5 years' experience with a technical background supporting refining operations.
• Experience working in/supporting at least one of the following technologies: Crude Distillation, Hydrogen Production, Hydrotreating/Hydrocracking, or Coking.
• Ability to work a rotating 12‑hour shift schedule.
• Must live within 50 miles of the El Segundo Refinery.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Only local candidates will be considered; relocation is not offered.
• Expatriate assignments will not be considered; Chevron does not sponsor employment visas for this role.

Qualifications

• 5 years’ leadership experience with shift operations in a refining organization.
• Experience in approving safe work practices (including lock‑out, tag‑out, critical lift, management of change and loss prevention processes).
• Ability to plan, follow through, and complete tasks as committed.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.

Pay

The anticipated salary range for this position is $120,300 – $180,500.
