About the role
POET is a leader in sustainable products and the largest producer and marketer of bioethanol. As a Shift Supervisor, you will oversee Plant Technicians, ensure maximum efficiency in plant operations, and support problem-solving across departments. This on-site role in North Manchester, IN operates on a 24-hour continuous schedule, requiring a 12-hour shift (including nights, weekends, and holidays).
Responsibilities
- Supervise plant operations on shift and influence execution of plant maintenance.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of daily documentation and process information.
- Make process decisions, including shutting down the plant if necessary.
- Contact department managers with problems/concerns and call in additional team members as needed.
- Maintain and operate all plant processes, including boilers, cooling towers, and water chemistry.
- Develop understanding of repair and maintenance of plant equipment; document maintenance activities.
- Perform basic electrical troubleshooting and strive for maximum efficiency in operations.
- Operate the DCS (computer control system) and other plant processes.
- Update SOPs and train personnel on procedure changes and plant modifications.
- Respond to collected data, adjust operations, and perform quality control tests on product streams.
- Supervise or perform equipment removal, installation, rebuilding, lubrication, and cleaning.
- Perform or supervise preventative and proactive maintenance tasks safely and efficiently.
- Coordinate shift exchange communication to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous plant operation.
- Operate forklifts as necessary and monitor safe forklift operations.
- Ensure all manufactured products meet established specifications.
- Ensure compliance with company, state, and federal regulatory policies; assist in implementing changes.
- Lead the team through recruiting, selecting, orienting, training, delegating, coaching, and managing performance.
- Foster a culture of safe behavior and environmental compliance.
- Maintain a team environment and champion POET in the community.
- Advance food safety and quality of POET’s products and processes.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required; secondary education preferred.
- Production or operational experience required; ethanol production background preferred.
- 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new programs.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and other gear.
- Work at extreme heights (~150 ft), in confined spaces, and in temperatures from -20°F to +100°F, both indoors and outdoors.
- Use tools and equipment such as hand tools, skid loaders, pipe wrenches, impact wrenches, air hoses, and shuttle wagons.
- Operate machinery like payloaders and Trackmobiles for extended periods.
- Frequently assume awkward positions (back, shoulders, wrists, hands), bend forward while standing, reach overhead, pull up to 40 lbs, and kneel/crouch for up to 15 minutes.
- Occasionally pull up to 95 lbs (with or without assistance), lift/carry up to 50 lbs, grip with up to 80 lbs of force, sit for 15 minutes, and pinch with up to 20 lbs of force.
- Subject to pre-employment physical and drug screen; random drug/alcohol testing during employment.
