About the role

This is an entry-level professional law enforcement position intended to secure a safe environment for county citizens and protect their rights as established by federal, state, and local laws.

Requirements

• Education & Experience: High School diploma or HSE (Uncertified), plus one year of specialized training through college, technical school, or professional organizations; or one year paid professional employment as a patrol officer in a sheriff's department or police department (Certified).
• No experience necessary (Uncertified).
• Mandatory Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Qualifications: Knowledge of law enforcement, principles, methods, and techniques of effective supervision; legal environment associated with law enforcement; local, state, and federal laws and regulations; traffic control and safety laws and regulations; county geography, road systems, and boundaries; standard first-aid administration; interpersonal communication skills; English, grammar, and technical writing skills (Uncertified).
• Working knowledge of law enforcement, principles, methods, and techniques of effective supervision; budgetary practices and purchasing methods and procedures; legal environment associated with law enforcement; local, state, and federal laws and regulations; criminal codes; departmental standard operating procedures; arrest, search, and seizure laws; booking and court procedures; traffic control and safety laws and regulations; methods and process for preserving and securing crime scenes, county geography, road systems, and boundaries; standard first-aid administration; interpersonal communication skills; English, grammar, and technical writing skills (Certified).
• Ability to apply modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment in various law enforcement situations; learn and interpret the Code related to law enforcement and the elements of crime; effectively process crime scenes; interpret and apply civil and criminal codes; deal effectively with the public in controversial and emergency situations; demonstrate knowledge of how to react in emergency situations; demonstrate problem-solving capability; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; develop effective working relationships with the public, administrators, and fellow employees; deal effectively with combative individuals in high-stress situations (Certified).
• Some skill in the operation of motor vehicles at high speed and in dangerous situations; skill in the use of firearms (Uncertified).
• Mandatory Qualifications: Valid New Mexico State Driver's License (Uncertified); must become a NEW MEXICO POLICE ACADEMY certified peace officer within 12 months from date of hire (Certified); must be 21 years of age (Certified); must possess a high level of customer service at all times (Certified); must be able to pass a fit for duty, psychological, and drug test prior to employment (Certified); as a safety-sensitive employee, subject to random drug testing (Certified).

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid New Mexico State Driver's License (Certified).
• Must be NEW MEXICO POLICE ACADEMY certified as a peace officer (Certified).
• Must maintain 20 hours of annual advanced academy training to maintain certification (Certified).
• Must become certified and maintain certification in various specialty enforcement skills, practices, and procedures related to DUI, pepper spray, tazer, stick, firearms, rifle, shotgun, defensive tactics, close contact engagement/take down, finger printing, radar, emergency vehicle operation, defensive driving, etc. (Certified).

Pay

$27.86 per hour (Uncertified) / $30.17 per hour (Certified)
