Shelter Advocate

Position Summary

Missions Inc. Programs is seeking Shelter Advocates on call/relief staff for its Home Free shelter, which provides immediate safety, advocacy, support, and information for women and children fleeing domestic abuse.

Position Responsibilities

• Provide advocacy, crisis intervention, support, information, and access to resources appropriate to the needs of victims of domestic violence
• Provide individual and class advocacy with social service, mental health, medical and criminal justice systems on behalf of our residents
• Facilitate cooperative living in the shelter through house meetings, conflict resolution, and by modeling cooperative and supportive behavior
• Aid in the ongoing development and maintenance of resource files
• Provide coverage for 24-hour crisis intervention, information, referral telephone service and business lines
• Assist with transportation for residents, housekeeping, and complete daily record-keeping while maintaining the confidentiality of all residents
• Cookordination departure plans and safety plans with residents leaving the shelter
• Work well with people from diverse racial, cultural, social and economic backgrounds and have an awareness of culturally specific resources

Experience and Qualifications

• An understanding of and sensitivity to the unique problems encountered by women/women identifying and children needing shelter and advocacy services
• Knowledge of social service, welfare, mental health, and criminal justice systems pertinent to the needs of domestic violence survivors
• The ability to respond to people in crisis with appropriate listening and intervention skills
• Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 35 pounds; be able to bend, stoop, kneel and climb (ascend and descend) several flights of stairs
• Valid Minnesota driver’s license and an insurable driving record
• Ability to work well with people from diverse racial, cultural, social and economic backgrounds

Compensation And Benefits

• Hour pay range is $18.00-$21.00
• We offer .40 cents differential pay for overnight and .50 cents for weekend shifts
• Benefits include ESST and the potential to participate in our 403b plan if you work 1,000 hours in a year
