Shear/Heavy Equipment Operator

About the role

The Shear Operator is responsible for the safe operation of metal processing equipment, including hydraulic, mechanical, or shearing equipment to shear, cut, or slit materials.

Responsibilities

• Operate metal shearing equipment using safe work habits.
• Observe shear operations to detect malfunctions and notify maintenance.
• Lift raw materials, finished products, and packed items, manually or using hoists.
• Load and unload items from machines, conveyors, and conveyances.
• Safely clean equipment when jams occur.
• Follow all procedures, including LOTOTO, Fall Prevention, and Fire Prevention.
• Clean up work area at the end of shift and keep work areas neat and orderly.
• Ensure regular attendance and punctuality.
• Organize materials for effective use of space.
• Dispose of various waste materials in the appropriate manner.
• Inspect work areas to ensure cleanup is completed.
• Maintain effective housekeeping for safety and hygienic conditions.
• Comply with all applicable federal, state, local, and SA Recycling safety, health, and environmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

• Must have 10 years of experience operating metal processing equipment.
• Must pass a medical physical and drug test.
• Must pass a background check.
• Preferred: high school diploma or GED (or foreign education equivalent).
• Bilingual (English & Spanish) language skills a plus.
• Ability to communicate effectively, understand directions (written or oral), and use basic math skills.

• Work Environment: Scrap metal recycling and shredder yard.
• Equipment & Tools: Shredder and other metal processing equipment, hoists, hydraulic motors, mechanics tools.
• Physical Demand Level: Light to moderate.
• Work Capacity: Shredder Operator.
• Sensory Demands: Hearing, vision, touch, smell, and taste.
• Hand Movements: Repetitive motions and gripping.
