SFDK Aquarist Apprentice $19.00/HR

Responsibilities

• General care and maintenance of all Aquarium facilities, including Shark Experience, Sting Ray Bay, Koi Pond, and Quarantine
• In-tank maintenance: scrubbing algae, vacuuming sand, cleaning windows
• Diet preparation and record keeping
• Housekeeping duties in guest areas of Shark Experience and Sting Ray Bay
• Opening procedures for Shark Experience and Sting Ray Bay
• Assist with educational programs and guest relations
• Assist with animal care, feeding, and training sessions as assigned
• Check pumps and filters; report any filtration problems to Aquarium Leadership
• Monitor the health and appearance of fish daily; report any problems immediately
• Maintain Life Support Systems for Sting Ray Bay and Shark Basin
• Follow all policies and procedures of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and the Aquarium Department
• Participate in animal restraint, moves, and transport operations
• Identify each shark and ray by house name
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned

Requirements

• Must be 18 years of age or older
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver license
• Comfortable speaking in front of large crowds
• Articulate with clear speaking, reading, and writing skills in English
• Good vision and hearing
• Willing to listen and follow both written and verbal instructions
• SCUBA certification required
• Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of basic power and hand tools
• Ability to work with chemicals and follow SDS; basic chemistry knowledge
• Willing and able to work 40 hours a week, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions
• Willing and able to work in and around saltwater and electrical equipment
• Strong swimming skills
• Available to work weekends and holidays
• Mental and physical capacities necessary to perform primary responsibilities; pass an annual physical exam and stress test
• Able to lift up to 60 lbs
