Sewing Machine Operator.

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed Tier 1 background investigation. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and annual examinations thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Use specialized sewing machines to create buttonholes, eyelet, bar tack, over edge, cylinder and chain stitch.
  • Occasionally perform other duties such as hand sewing, alterations or repairs.
  • Identify completed garments according to size and lot and apply bar coding tickets.
  • Prepare for assembly work already cut.
  • Operate a standard high-speed industrial sewing machine.
  • Work with different types of fabrics and/or clothing materials.

Requirements

  • Appointment is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary, the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the following abilities without more than normal supervision:
    • Aligning and positioning materials to perform straight and slightly curved edge stitching.
    • Operating sewing machines used for lock stitching.
    • Making alterations to garments which result in an exact fit.
  • Physical effort includes sitting and/or standing for long periods with continued movement of hands, arms, and fingers. Must handle relatively heavy and bulky fabric or clothing items.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work. You must demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work without more than normal supervision.

Working Conditions

  • Shop is adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated.
  • Operators are subject to cuts, punctures, scratches, burns, and other minor irritations from handling sharp tools and pressing equipment.
  • Subject to allergies from dyes, dust, and lint from fabrics.
  • Exposure to noise from sewing machines.
