About the role

Sessional Lecturer position for MGY377H1: Microbiology I: Bacteria, an in-depth study of bacteria including their structure, biology, adaptability, and effects on human health. This course provides a foundation for advanced studies in bacterial physiology, bacterial genetics, molecular pathogenesis of disease, immunology, and environmental studies.

Estimated course enrolment: 350 students
Estimated TA support: 180 TA hours

Schedule

  • Class schedule: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.)
  • Sessional dates of appointment: September 1 to December 30, 2026
  • Approximate time commitment: 10 hours per week
  • Some interactions with students may be required to be done online

Pay

  • Sessional Lecturer I: $9,997.48 (inclusive of vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $10,699.22 (inclusive of vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer II: $10,699.22 (inclusive of vacation pay)
  • Sessional Lecturer III: $10,953.96 (inclusive of vacation pay)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Qualifications

  • Experience with concepts and methods in foundational microbiology, bacterial cell structure, bacteriophage biology, and bacterial pathogenesis
  • Knowledgeable about antimicrobial resistance
  • Previous teaching experience is desirable but not required

Responsibilities

  • Deliver approximately half of the lectures across the academic term (thrice weekly one-hour sessions each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2-3 pm throughout the fall semester)
  • Prepare for and deliver the midterm and final exam
  • Work with Teaching Assistants as needed
  • Host weekly office hours for student support
  • Minimal modification of existing course slides and materials may be required to update them for use this year

The successful applicant will have the support of teaching assistants from the previous year and access to existing course materials that have been used successfully in prior years.
