SERVICE WORKERS (PART TIME)

Part-time position (up to 24 hours per week) with variable shifts including evenings, weekends, and overtime as required. Schedule is not fixed and will vary based on operational needs. Additional hours may be available for shift coverage in accordance with the collective agreement.

About the role

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Facility Services, the Service Worker performs cleaning, custodial, and service tasks according to assigned shift times and locations. This role also assists with setting up facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events.

Responsibilities

• Regularly clean and sanitize washrooms following established practices and procedures, including:
  • Cleaning sinks, walls, partitions, toilets, urinals, mirrors, floors, metal fixtures, and plumbing fixtures
  • Replenishing supplies such as paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap, and sanitizers in washrooms, kitchens, and other areas
• Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty and clean wastebaskets and trash containers
• Wash walls, windows, and clean blinds and equipment; launder cleaning rags and dust mops
• Clean and make beds for residence guests when required
• Use and maintain assigned equipment, including ladders, power tools, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high-pressure washers, vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for cleaning and maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, and furniture
• Secure facilities when not in use by checking for unlocked doors and windows and reporting unauthorized occupants
• Follow instructions for the safe use of chemicals
• Assist with setting up facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events, including moving and resetting furniture
• Remove debris and assist with snow removal around campus, including sidewalks and stairs, using shovels, hand-operated tools, small power equipment, or snow blowers
• Attend required training on cleaning methods, new products, and workplace health and safety
• Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements

• Grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent in education and experience
• Minimum of 2 years of previous cleaning experience
• Banquet and housekeeping experience in a hotel, residential, or academic setting is an asset
• Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry or move heavy items regularly (minimum 50 pounds), including furniture, and safely operate cleaning equipment
• Ability to perform diverse physical tasks, including shoveling snow, cleaning, and clearing debris, with continuous standing and walking
• Effective communication skills (written and verbal) for interacting with coworkers, staff, and visitors
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and overtime
• Must wear assigned uniform and footwear while on duty

Pay

• 60-day probationary rate: minimum $28.63 per hour
• Post-probationary rate: minimum $28.83 per hour
• Part-time staff are eligible for 7% pay in lieu of benefits and participation in a defined benefit pension plan

Service Workers are members of the Service Employees International Union, Local 2, and are subject to the terms and conditions of the current collective agreement.
