Service Field Tech - Power Systems Tech II, III, or IV
About the Role
Service Field Technicians (Power Systems Technicians or NETA Technicians) perform service, test, and maintain various types of power transmission and distribution equipment.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, test, troubleshoot, perform start-up, and collect data of low, medium, and/or high voltage (to 500kV) electrical systems.
- Install, commission, test, and maintain protective relaying equipment, including relay panels, transformers, and circuit breakers.
- Develop and document standardized commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures for relay systems.
- Perform functional testing of substation control circuits to validate proper relay operation.
- Create relay macros and testing routines to confirm system protection and control configurations.
- Execute end-to-end relay testing with specialized software, identifying relay behavior based on fault conditions.
- Review relay settings and logic equations to ensure alignment with design requirements.
- Test low, medium, and/or high voltage switchgear and circuit breakers.
- Perform inspection, maintenance, testing, and repair of transformers, circuit breakers, and related equipment (45 KVA to 130 MVA, dry type and/or oil filled).
- Maintain, test, recondition, and repair circuit breakers (low voltage 480 volt molded case and air-magnetic; medium voltage up to 15 KV air-magnetic and vacuum).
- Test and inspect low and medium voltage cable installations.
- Operate high voltage test equipment, including Doble Power Factor test sets.
- Perform start-up, troubleshooting, and repair services on controls and transfer schemes.
- Rotate emergency on-call duty and respond to customer emergencies in a timely manner.
- Ensure all work and decisions comply with regulatory laws.
- Other duties as assigned by manager.
Requirements
All candidates must meet the following base requirements:
- High School diploma/GED or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of industry standards such as NETA, NEC, OSHA, and NFPA.
- Must work safely and adhere to all electrical safety procedures.
- Good theoretical understanding of electricity and problem-solving aptitude.
- Effective verbal and written communication with customers and peers.
- Dependable, responsible, with good judgment and organizational skills.
- Strong customer service, time management, and follow-up skills.
- Ability to work effectively with customers, peers, and management to resolve issues.
- Strong computer skills, including Windows and Microsoft Office; ability to use the Internet for research.
- Valid driver’s license for positions requiring a company vehicle.
Qualifications by Level
Service Field Tech
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a related field.
- Prefer experience with MCCs, breakers, relay testing, oil testing, infrared scanning, or performing start-up on switchgear up through 500kV class. Military training (e.g., Army Prime Power, Air Force Electrical Power Production, Navy) may substitute.
Senior Service Field Tech
- 5 years of experience in a related field.
- Strong background in high voltage equipment through the 230 kV class.
- Ability to complete projects on budget and at a reasonable contribution.
- Experience completing on-site job reports.
Power Systems Tech II
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a related field.
- NETA Level II Certification.
- Performs testing and service work with direct supervision; qualified to ensure personal safety.
- Understanding of lockout/tagout, arc-flash, and shock hazard analyses.
Power Systems Tech III
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a related field.
- NETA Level III Certification.
- Mentors and leads Level I and II Technicians; responsible for safety of others.
- Qualified to provide guidance and perform electrical power switching.
Power Systems Tech IV
- Associate degree in a related field or equivalent experience, plus 5 years of experience (or 10 years of related experience).
- NETA Level IV Certification.
- Mentors and leads Level I, II, and III Technicians; supervises large projects and multiple crews.
- Performs complex investigations, tests, and evaluations; prepares written reports.
- Works independently and can perform electrical power switching.
