About the role
The Service Driver operates alternate vehicles to transport passengers over specific routes according to schedules and/or on-demand service. Service Drivers interact with passengers in a courteous and helpful manner, performing duties in a safe, efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable rules and safety procedures.
Responsibilities
- Drives alternate vehicles to transport passengers safely and courteously according to schedules.
- Drives alternate vehicles over specified routes, subject to change as service demand changes.
- Adds and/or removes trips via an electronic tablet or as directed by METRO’s Bus Control Staff and/or curb2curb Dispatch.
- Makes only designated stops in the order prescribed as communicated by Roster, Mobile Data Terminal, METRO’s Bus Control, and/or curb2curb Dispatch for route optimization.
- Documents trip problems on the day of service, including all required information.
- Reports as required to meet schedules and communicates route progress.
- Conducts pre-trip inspections of alternate vehicles, including radio systems and mobile data terminals, and records any defects.
- Complies with ADA requirements when executing duties.
- Handles patron complaints, rudeness, and problems with sensitivity to passengers’ needs.
- Distributes notices to passengers and renders assistance when requested by METRO.
- Announces destinations, transfer points, and intersections to keep passengers oriented during their ride.
- Complies with local traffic regulations.
- Follows procedures for fare collection, processing, and documentation.
- Reports and follows up on all accidents or unusual incidents involving METRO vehicles.
- Provides courteous and respectful customer service to internal and external customers.
- Applies Safety Management System (SMS) methods and principles in daily routines and supports the agency’s Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP).
- Promotes safety awareness and follows safety procedures to reduce or eliminate accidents.
- Performs other job-related duties as required.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of two (2) years of general work experience, including driving and customer service experience.
- Minimum of two (2) years of continuous employment in a direct public contact position is preferred.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must have held a driver’s license for at least three (3) years.
- Valid Texas Driver’s license, meeting METRO’s motor vehicle record requirements.
- No criminal convictions or history of DWI, DUI, assault, or possession of controlled substances.
- Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, drug and alcohol screen, background investigation, and pre-employment assessments.
- Ability to determine the location of any address and arrive on time using a key map or electronic mobile data terminal.
Pay
Hourly rate: $16.31
