Server Support Engineer
About the role
The On Premises Server Support Engineer is responsible for end-to-end server infrastructure operations including virtualization platforms, storage, backup, performance monitoring, security compliance, and capacity planning. The role provides advanced L2-L3 support, leads deep technical troubleshooting, supports disaster recovery activities, and ensures adherence to Quanta security compliance and operational standards across on-premises environments.
Responsibilities
- Server Provisioning Lifecycle Management
- Perform server provisioning and resource allocation as per approved standards
- Manage server lifecycle including build configuration, scaling, maintenance, and decommissioning
- Install and configure guest virtual machine operating systems
- Execute start/stop operations for servers and VMs as part of planned and operational activities
- Provide hands and feet support for identified server rooms excluding CoLo data centers
- Virtualization Hypervisor Administration
- Administer VMware and Hyper V environments
- Configure and manage oHA and DRS settings
- oResource pools, oAffinity and anti-affinity rules
- Assist with cluster sizing, failover behavior, DR runbooks, recovery sequencing, and DR drills
- Lead technical troubleshooting and escalations with VMware, Microsoft, and storage vendors
- Monitoring Performance Health Checks
- Perform remote host monitoring and performance tuning
- Conduct regular health checks including alarms, system roles, and configuration validation
- Monitor servers using Dynatrace
- Perform detailed technical troubleshooting of infrastructure performance issues
- Collaborate with storage teams to analyse datastore performance, latency, queue depth, and multipathing behavior
- Patch Security Compliance Management
- Execute monthly patch management for servers and hypervisors
- Implement CIS Benchmarks for platform hardening
- Apply server and hypervisor hardening standards including secure configurations, logging policies, and privileged access controls
- Ensure adherence to Quanta compliance security standards and governance guardrails
- Backup Recovery Operations
- Manage backup operations for production and non-production workloads as per Quanta policies
- Monitor backup jobs and perform daily backup health checks
- Troubleshoot backup failures and execute scheduled or ad hoc restore requests
- Apply and manage backup policies
- Tune backup performance by optimizing throughput, concurrency, proxy sizing, network paths, and storage IO performance
- Lead root cause analysis for chronic backup failures
- Participate in annual DR activities and DR drills
- Storage Management
- Implement storage provisioning requests and access controls as per approved standards
- Manage storage operations
- Create, delete, sync storage blobs
- Track datastore LUN and volume utilization
- Monitor thin provisioning risks and snapshot reserve usage
- Perform standard tasks
- Datastore expansion
- VM disk extension
- Execute snapshot creation and removal policies and manage snapshot growth risks
- Aid Quanta in defining storage tiers, storage resiliency, and DR procedures
- Capacity Planning Reporting
- Recommend capacity planning for servers, virtualization, backup, and storage
- Produce weekly reports including backup success rates, failure trends, and missed backups
- Generate capacity planning and forecasting reports for storage and infrastructure
- Automation Operational Excellence
- Develop and maintain automation using PowerShell or equivalent scripting tools
- Automate server and VM provisioning, patch orchestration, backup validation, health checks, compliance verification, reporting, and failure remediation
- Maintain CMDB and inventory updates including storage mapping documentation
- Plan and execute firmware upgrades, non-disruptive updates, and controller upgrades
- Collect diagnostic data logs, performance metrics, error signatures for vendor escalation
Requirements
Experience 5 years of experience in on-premises server virtualization, storage, and backup support. Strong hands-on experience with VMware and Hyper V, enterprise backup solutions, and other relevant technologies.
Qualifications
Technical certifications in VMware, Microsoft, and storage technologies are preferred. Familiarity with industry-standard backup and disaster recovery practices is required.
Skills
Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell, strong problem-solving skills, excellent communication and collaboration abilities, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
