Union at the Press Hotel in Portland, Maine is hiring servers to join our team of hospitality professionals.

About the Role

Greet, direct, seat, and take food and beverage orders. Serve guests in accordance with company standards. Be knowledgeable of all food and drink offered. Use suggestive selling methods to continuously strive for revenue growth. Understand and communicate daily specials and specialty menus to guests. Be perceptive, proactive, and engaging while anticipating guest needs. Personalize the guest experience when possible, remembering guests and their requests.

Responsibilities

• Complete pre-shift preparation such as setting tables and preparing service station.
• Complete side work and closing tasks as required, including cleaning and restocking for the next shift.
• Operate efficiently and calmly during peak service times and high-stress situations.
• Seek assistance from leadership when needed to ensure guest satisfaction.
• Polish glassware and flatware, record any breakage.
• Remove trash and restock service stations and service bar areas.
• Make coffee, tea, and espressos.
• Prepare and present the final bill to guests for payment, obtain settlement, and process using the POS system with adjusted tips if noted.
• Reconcile cash, accurately charge credit cards, and make appropriate cash deposits at the end of the shift.
• Check out with the manager once the shift is complete.
• Practice cleanliness and safety in all dining areas, liquor, and wine storage areas.
• Professionally handle guest complaints, solve problems, and follow up on unresolved issues with Food & Beverage management.
• Communicate allergy concerns to guests and demonstrate knowledge of food allergies and safety.
• Assist team members as needed to promote a positive teamwork environment.
• Understand and use safe work practices for all safety precautions, including Emergency Evacuation Procedures, Violence in the Workplace, Accident Reporting, OSHA Compliance, and Bloodborne Pathogen Procedures.
• Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
• Comply with all policies as outlined in the Handbook, Property Supplement, or otherwise issued, including time and attendance expectations, uniform and dress code standards, anti-harassment policy, and substances in the workplace.

Requirements

• Ability to remain standing for up to 8 hours.
• Ability to lift items overhead.
• Ability to bend and reach frequently and repetitively during a shift.
• Ability to remain in a standing or walking position for 90% of the shift, given moderate rest breaks.
• Ability to move up and down stairs.
• Ability to move quickly based on guest needs.
• Ability to regularly move and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to use repetitive manual dexterity, such as typing, polishing, using hand tools, and fixing small items.
• Ability to bend, stretch, and reach frequently, including above head, and repetitively during a shift.
• Ability to bend and kneel.
• Ability to visibly survey property areas clearly.
• Ability to view a digital computer/tablet screen.
• Ability to communicate and exchange information effectively, often in a public/group setting.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
• Ability to complete a satisfactory background check.
• Ability to perform assigned tasks, operate equipment, and complete job duties in a safe manner.
• Ability to work flexible hours based on business needs, including midweek and weekend days.

Pay

The anticipated starting pay for this position is $9.00 per hour plus tips. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications, skills, and internal equity.

Schedule

Part-time availability is welcome, with up to full-time hours available. Current shift openings will primarily be PM, but all availability is welcome to apply.
