About the role
Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ), a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York, is seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Server for the Food Services Department. The ideal Server will bring a passion for HCZ’s mission: breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty through comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds opportunities for children and families to thrive.
Responsibilities
- Plating meals according to proper portion sizes
- Set-up, breakdown, and re-set of serving lines; and after-meal service
- Auxiliary stocking of side stations and other designated areas with proper supplies and items prior to each meal service
- Maintaining sanitary conditions; implementing and practicing a “Clean as you Go” policy to keep areas clean and safe
- Practicing safe, sanitary food handling and service
- Maintaining and replenishing salad bars during meal periods
- Maintaining and replenishing milk chest as needed
- Knowing the daily menu, salad bar, and possible allergens they may contain
- Informing students of the scheduled menu and new items while looking for ways to increase breakfast and lunch participation
- Collecting student feedback on food quality, likes, and dislikes during non-service time
- Completing additional tasks requested by a management team
- Standing for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, and reaching to store/retrieve supplies
- Lifting, carrying, and pushing supplies and boxes up to 50 pounds
Requirements
- High School Diploma
- Valid DOH NYC Food Protection Certificate
- Two years experience in the food service/customer service
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent customer service
- Basic culinary knowledge of product identification, terminology, and production
- Ability to work in stressful, high-pressure situations
- Effective listening and problem-solving skills
- Ability to stand for long periods of time, bend, kneel, and reach to store/retrieve supplies
- Ability to lift, carry, and push supplies and boxes up to 50 pounds

Pay
The compensation range for this position is $20-$21 per hour.
