About the Role

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities related to maintaining the security, control, and custody of inmates in a state adult correctional facility. This is the leadership level where employees serve as correctional security sergeants, acting as team leaders or lead workers. Responsibilities may include providing training, assigning work, and performing specialized functions such as:

• Inmate public work crew officer
• Gun gang officer
• K-9 unit officer
• Transportation officer
• Restricted housing unit officer
• Key and tool officer
• Control room officer
• Visiting room officer
• Gate officer
• Activities officer
• Hospital security posts
• Armory officer

Responsibilities

• Provides security and supervision to inmates in a variety of situations and activities; maintains security of an assigned area or post.
• Supervises inmate work crews; escorts inmates to work sites; inventories and controls all equipment, weapons, tools, and keys.
• Patrols yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories, and work areas on an assigned shift; observes activities and movements of inmates; manages inmate conduct, work, and discipline.
• Maintains order and discipline during programs, meals, and recreation periods; inspects living areas, facilities, and work locations for unauthorized objects or materials; reports incidents.
• Operates manually or electronically controlled security equipment to maintain controlled movement of inmates, staff, and the public.
• Conducts inmate counts; performs searches of inmates and living quarters for contraband; enforces institutional rules and regulations.
• Prepares written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status, and movement.
• Participates on escape and apprehension teams; responds to riots and fires.

Requirements

• Minimum age of 20 years.
• Possession of thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university or a high school diploma/GED equivalent and graduation from a training course conducted or approved by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (prior to employment or within the first six months of employment).
• Twenty-four months of experience in correctional or security work for a governmental agency or private corrections agency.
• Satisfactory completion of minimum testing or professional evaluation through the Merit System of Personnel Administration.
• Satisfactory completion of an annual physical examination aligned with job requirements.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
• Willingness and ability to work any assigned shift or day of the week, including additional shifts as required.
• Subject to drug testing.

Special Requirements

• Training includes physical conditioning, self-defense tactics, and application of oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray.
• Employees may be designated as peace officers and must meet training and screening requirements certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training.
• Ineligibility for employment if:
  • Convicted of any offense requiring registration under the Sex Offenders Registration Act.
  • Convicted of a crime of moral turpitude without a full pardon.
  • Convicted of a nonviolent felony without a full pardon, or convicted of any other felony offense.
  • Convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence without a pardon, expungement, or court order allowing eligibility.
  • Dishonorably discharged from any branch of the armed services.
• Some positions are designated as safety-sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. 427.8.

Skills

• Knowledge of English usage, basic math, and report writing.
• Knowledge of the use and care of firearms, proper restraint methods, self-defense techniques, and inmate discipline methods.
• Understanding of inmate behavior psychology.
• Ability to evaluate situations and adopt effective courses of action.
• Alertness and ability to act quickly and effectively in emergencies.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Proficiency in gathering and organizing facts to complete clear, concise reports.
• Effective communication and conflict management within the inmate population.
• Ability to maintain proficiency with firearms.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Pay

$49,358.40 annually.

Schedule

Full-time, regular position. Employees must be willing and able to work any assigned shift or day of the week, including additional shifts as required.
