Sergeant (#011234) Broad River Secure Facility, Columbia (RICHLAND) Level 3

Responsibilities

• Supervises the performance of security personnel assigned to shift.
• Assists with preparation of employee evaluations, disciplinary action and counseling sessions.
• Assists with conducting shift briefings with all officers.
• Remains familiar with all activities occurring during the shift to keep subordinates informed of changes affecting inmates and operations.
• Makes routine and non-routine security checks of work areas, living area units.
• Conducts formal and non-formal counts.
• Investigates inmate complaints and takes appropriate action; instruct and counsel inmates as required.
• Monitors inmate movement within the institution.
• Performs essential and marginal duties of subordinates.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

South Carolina State Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and relevant experience.
• A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements:

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
