Senior Workers' Compensation Underwriting Consultant - Orange County/San Diego Market

Responsibilities

  • Calculates and develops premium quotations in accordance with corporate underwriting guidelines and assigned authority.
  • Determines underwriting eligibility and analyzes accounts for insurability; accepts or rejects risks within authority for new business, renewals, and endorsements.
  • Analyzes production, loss trends, and exposure data to establish pricing and implement corrective action plans where needed.
  • Manages and develops agency relationships, including agency planning, performance monitoring, audits, and training on systems and processes.
  • Drives new business growth, profitability, and retention within an assigned territory or region.
  • Serves as a primary contact for agents and policyholders, addressing concerns and coordinating issue resolution across internal departments.
  • Develops service strategies for large accounts in partnership with claims, loss control, premium audit, and other internal teams.
  • Interprets territory performance reports, monitors competitive activity, and gathers market intelligence to inform strategy.
  • Participates in promotional activities, trade associations, and industry events to represent and promote company products.
  • Contributes to rate reviews, agency advisory councils, regional planning, and special projects or committees.
  • Prepares reports and provides insights to support business decisions and regional goals.
  • Manages a defined territory/region with increasing independence, demonstrating leadership and mentoring less experienced staff.

Requirements

Relevant combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, insurance or related field. MBA or other advanced degree is preferred.

Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.

Five (5) years of experience in an insurance organization with demonstrated technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas: underwriting, marketing, loss prevention, auditing or similar knowledge that provide the necessary skills and abilities.

Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company’s learning philosophy.

Workers’ compensation or P&C insurance experience required.

  • Proven ability to manage and develop agency relationships while making sound, independent underwriting decisions.
  • Able to calculate and communicate premium quotations, expected pricing, and dividends accurately.
  • Strong analytical skills to assess territory performance, identify trends or issues, and implement corrective action strategies.
  • Effective problem-solving skills, including evaluating complex situations, understanding impacts, and determining or escalating appropriate solutions.
  • Able to analyze, interpret, and manage data to support underwriting and business decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to clearly present information, answer questions, and communicate value to agents, policyholders, and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and adapt to changing business needs.
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in addressing unique underwriting or business challenges.
  • Able to support regional or territory goals and contribute to broader business strategy.
  • Working knowledge of agency audit processes and ability to implement audit procedures effectively.

Benefits

Actual compensation decision relies on the consideration of internal equity, candidate’s skills and professional experience, geographic location, market, and other potential factors.

Pay Range - Between $90,640 and $151,855.
