About the role

The Senior VDC Engineer drives the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) workflows across the full project lifecycle. This role owns model integrity, leads cross-disciplinary coordination, and guides a team of VDC Engineers, ensuring technology enables smarter, faster, and more predictable construction outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Leads VDC strategy and oversees BIM processes throughout project delivery, from pre-construction through closeout.
  • Builds, manages, and mentors a team of VDC Engineers; provides coaching, performance feedback, and career development support.
  • Creates and maintains detailed electrical BIM models fully integrated within the overall project model.
  • Drives clash detection and resolution using Navisworks and other coordination tools, ensuring conflict-free construction models.
  • Leads interdisciplinary coordination meetings, aligning stakeholders and resolving design conflicts before they reach the field.
  • Integrates subcontractor and vendor models into project BIM workflows, maintaining data accuracy and model quality.
  • Conducts model audits to verify compliance with company and project standards.
  • Trains project teams on BIM software, workflows, and best practices; builds capability across the organization.
  • Implements emerging VDC technologies, including laser scanning, drones, and augmented reality, to improve project execution.
  • Monitors VDC industry trends and applies relevant advancements to continuously improve team processes.

Requirements

  • Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in electrical contracting with a focus on BIM and VDC.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience that results in the successful performance of the job. Additional education may substitute for required experience on a one-for-one year basis or vice versa.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BIM-related certifications such as Autodesk Certified Professional (ACP).
  • Hands-on experience with laser scanning, drone imaging, and augmented reality in a construction environment.
  • Proven track record leading BIM coordination on large-scale or mission-critical construction projects.

Skills

  • Deep knowledge of BIM and VDC standards, coordination workflows, and model integration practices.
  • Strong understanding of electrical construction processes and documentation.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, Evolve, and Bluebeam.
  • Skilled in clash detection, BIM auditing, and model quality control.
  • Ability to manage complex, multi-discipline BIM processes and collaborate across project teams.
  • Confident facilitating coordination meetings and resolving design conflicts efficiently.
  • Ability to train and develop junior VDC staff.
  • Effective at prioritizing and managing multiple tasks under deadline pressure.
  • Adapts quickly to changing project needs.

Work Environment

Medium work environment with both indoor office settings and periodic exposure to active construction sites. Field visits may involve physical demands including:

  • Lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Wearing personal protective equipment.
  • Navigating uneven terrain and working in varying weather conditions.
  • Performing climbing, crawling, and working in confined or elevated spaces.
