Senior Underwriting Governance Specialist
About the role
The Underwriting Integrity and Solutions team builds and maintains underwriting governance frameworks across P&C Commercial and Specialty businesses. This role supports the Chief Underwriting Office (CUO) in ensuring underwriting adheres to risk appetite and aligns with business goals.
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and continuously improve underwriting governance frameworks to maximize adherence to risk appetite and support CUO strategic objectives.
- Design and manage reporting and analytics capabilities to provide actionable insights into underwriting performance and risk appetite adherence.
- Support training and capability-building initiatives to embed governance standards and risk awareness across underwriting teams.
- Collaborate with Line of Business (LoB) leaders to promote and realize first-line of defense underwriting risk ownership.
- Drive adoption of new governance frameworks in a matrixed environment, influencing stakeholders without direct authority.
- Identify gaps in existing underwriting controls and recommend risk-based enhancements to strengthen the control environment and advance risk management objectives.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Insurance Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or other analytical field.
- 3–5 years of experience in underwriting, underwriting governance, or a closely related risk/compliance function within P&C, Commercial or Specialty Lines, with exposure to large- and/or middle- corporate business segments preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to develop or significantly contribute to risk-based underwriting guidelines, policy frameworks, or governance programs — with an emphasis on business enablement and supporting CUO objectives.
- Strong analytical skills with experience in data reporting tools (e.g., Power BI); ability to synthesize complex data, draw meaningful conclusions, and translate findings into actionable governance recommendations and enhancements.
- Proven track record of influencing cross-functional stakeholders and navigating complex organizational structures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills — able to translate technical underwriting concepts for diverse audiences.
- Curiosity and initiative in exploring how AI tools can streamline or enhance underwriting governance frameworks; paired with the critical judgment to assess AI outputs rigorously, recognizing the low tolerance for hallucination or error in a risk governance context.
- Self-starter who thrives with autonomy and can manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience building or enhancing underwriting governance and control frameworks within a complex insurance organization, a plus.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements relevant to P&C Commercial and Specialty Lines, a plus.
- Knowledge of Canadian and/or Latin American market dynamics and regulatory requirements, a plus.
- Experience with delegated underwriting authority (DUA) programs and/or Excess & Surplus (E&S) lines, a plus.
- Spanish language fluency, a plus.
- Experience in applying artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to improve business processes and decision-making is highly beneficial.

Benefits
The annualized base pay range for this role is $126,000 - $165,000. The annual base salary range represents a nationwide market range. The actual salary for this position may be above and will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate. The base pay is just one component of the AzC total compensation package. As part of our comprehensive compensation and highly rated benefits programs, employees are also eligible for annual performance-based cash incentive awards.
