Senior Underwriting Consultant - Supplemental Health
About the role
The Senior Underwriting Consultant for Supplemental Health insurance plays a critical role within our Group Employee Benefits Underwriting Dept. to Underwrite for and assist with the launch of new Supplemental Health Product offerings to help OneAmerica meet sales and profitability targets.
Core Focus
- Support the launch of our new Supplemental Health Products including Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity.
- Act as the subject matter expert (SME) for Supplemental Health products including creating and delivering training for the underwriting team.
- Partner with Regional Supplemental Health Directors throughout the launch of new product offerings.
- Analyze and price employer groups for Supplemental Health products, and ideally Life and Disability offerings to meet divisional growth and profitability goals.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Triage new prospects to assess risk, plan design, data completeness, and pricing approach including any needed experience rating.
- Advise Distribution on plan designs & pricing recommendation including options for benefit levels, comparison to current or competition, rating assumptions and risk analysis.
- Evaluate enrollment conditions and strategies to ensure successful implementation and satisfaction of any required product participation.
- Negotiate with sales reps on new business to balance competitiveness with risk and support progress toward divisional sales goals.
- Collaborate with Account Managers on renewals by applying the company’s renewal strategy considering plan designs, utilization, and pricing to maximize retention and ensure profitable performance.
- Cross-functionally with Distribution, Operations, Claims, Product, and Actuarial to ensure alignment and promote positive customer experience.
- Coordinate special projects for leadership including process improvements, pricing updates, and new product features / offerings.
- Mentor teammates including reviewing work, sharing best practices, and helping to upskill the team.
Success Metrics
- Profitability: Meeting loss ratio and margin targets on new and renewing cases.
- Growth: Assisting Distribution through achieving close ratio targets for sold premium and case count, as well as satisfying rate to target pricing levels.
- Retention: Managing renewals to achieve retention targets while protecting profitability.
- Speed & Quality: Satisfying preset turnaround targets for prospects and renewals while providing accurate, well-documented pricing decisions.
- Collaboration: Demonstrating ability to work with partners across the organization including Distribution, Operations, and Claims to achieve Divisional objectives.
Skills & Experience
- 5+ years Supplemental Health Underwriting experience including Accident, Critical Illness, and Hospital Indemnity risk evaluation and pricing.
- Strongly preferred 5+ years Life and Disability Underwriting experience including risk evaluation and pricing as well as proficiency with experience rating for these products.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Technical/Functional Experience with rating models, trend & utilization assumptions, case characteristics, industry, demographics, and plan design impacts.
- Strong Proficiency with Excel with ability to use complex spreadsheets, rate tables and other underwriting tools.
- Strong documentation, justification, and audit trail discipline.
- Strategic mindset with ability to balance view of growth vs. risk.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to negotiate successfully with Distribution.
- Stakeholder management thought balancing needs from diverse partners including Distribution, Operations, Actuarial, Product and Claims.
- Training & mentoring capabilities including developing materials, setting clear explanations, and coaching.
Pay
Salary Band: 06B

This selected candidate will be expected to work remote. The candidate will also be expected to physically return to the office in CA, IN or ME as business needs dictate for team building and collaboration.
Consistent with applicable pay transparency laws, we disclose the compensation range for this position: $79,500 - $132.500 annually. Actual compensation will be determined by factors such as education, experience, geographical location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. In addition to base pay, this role is eligible for an annual incentive program.
