About the role
The Senior Underwriter will develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and serve as a specialized technical expert for Middle Market P&C Accounts. This is a hybrid position in Charlotte, NC with a minimum of 20% travel for broker/production needs.
Responsibilities
- Manage assigned broker portfolio of accounts to achieve efficient returns of profitability and growth.
- Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet top and bottom line targets.
- Ensure placing and binding of FAC Reinsurance prior to policy inception.
- Proactively develop relationships with brokers and agents assigned within the territory to pursue new business acquisition and/or large renewal retention.
- Acquire new business and retain existing business, including client and broker negotiations.
- Manage complex referrals from underwriters and spokes, and re-underwrite complex business as appropriate.
- Proactively drive involvement of functional areas in the underwriting process, including MMC, ARC, Claims, and Operations.
- Handle market-facing broker relationships with a minimum of 20% travel.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2+ years of Commercial Property & Casualty Underwriting experience.
- Middle Market experience is preferred.
- Recognized established relationships with brokers at peer group level and within market.
- Experience with General Liability, Umbrella, Commercial Auto, Commercial Property, and/or Workers Compensation.
- Good understanding of legal and regulatory framework.
- Undergraduate degree required; Economics, Finance, Insurance Management, or Business Administration is preferred.
- Completion of professional insurance qualification (e.g., CPCU) is preferred, but not required.

- Risk Assessment and Management: Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards relevant to Middle Market P&C.
- Pricing and Market Management: Analyze current performance against benchmarks, applying knowledge of how the market operates and functions, business needs, and customer needs.
- Contract Drafting and Interpretation: Design, develop, and implement consistent, robust wordings.
- Policy Management: Robust understanding of the policy administration life cycle, including information collection, policy issuance, premium bookings, credit control, and cancellation.
- Influencing Skills: Ability to persuade and motivate others to act without executive authority.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to effectively absorb information from various sources, analyze and examine data in detail, and draw appropriate conclusions.
- IT Skills (Office applications): Proficiency in general office application tools such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
