Excess & Surplus Line - Senior Underwriter Basic Purpose Provide underwriting efforts to develop a book of business submitted by contracted producers to achieve profitability goals. Assist personnel in all levels of: Individual risk underwriting decisionsUnderwriting strategyBook managementProduct development and managementEfficient operations and technology Mentoring responsibilities to include partnering with the Managing Director and working with less‑experienced Underwriters and Assistants to enhance their skills. Maintain and build upon appropriate business relationships with various constituencies, including but not limited to fellow employees, assigned brokers, reinsurers, and vendors. Duties And Responsibilities As assigned and within established authority, the Senior Underwriter will: Effectively write and retain profitable business aligned with division objectivesBuild a strong working relationship with producersAssist underwriting personnel at all levels to analyze and evaluate risk, recognizing exposures to make sound underwriting decisions on risk acceptability, coverage alternatives, risk management recommendations, and pricing and/or perform these duties on larger or more complex risksReview and evaluate products, filings, and pricing needs. Make recommendations for enhancements and changes as appropriateRespond in a timely manner to work/questionsDevelop opportunities for information flowMaintain and continue to develop technical knowledge and expertiseDevelop leadership skills through internal and external publications, seminars, and conferences, and share knowledge gained with peersContribute to the management team by discussing issues, developing efficiencies, and identifying and assisting in resolving conflictsParticipate in or lead assigned projects and special research projects as necessaryTravel as required, up to 10 percentPerform other duties as assigned Essential Functions Underwrite to attain profitable growth objectivesAssist personnel at all levels to analyze and evaluate risks or perform such duties as neededReview and evaluate products, filings, and pricing needsBuild a strong working relationship with producersAssist in development of division goals and objectives and achieving the supporting budget NOTE: This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties performed by this employee. Job Specifications Prior Experience: Ten years or more of underwriting, product development, product management, claims, risk management, distribution management, or related functions with a proven record of favorable accomplishmentsSignificant knowledge of the property and casualty industry is required, with knowledge of surplus and specialty lines preferred Education Bachelor’s degree or comparable industry experience may be considered, with a high school diploma or equivalent requiredCPCU, ASLI, ARM, or equivalent designations preferred, or evidence of continuing and progressive education in the insurance industry Necessary Knowledge And Abilities Solid technical knowledge of commercial insurance forms, rates, and rulesUnderstanding of the state and federal regulatory environmentSkilled in building relationships, exercising sound judgment, making decisions, and influencing othersUnderstands the big picture and goals of the company and helps drive business unit results to contribute to the overall success and goals of the organizationPossesses a customer‑centric service philosophyAbove‑average communication skillsNegotiation, facilitation, and consensus‑building skillsThorough understanding or ability to learn new lines of business, including insurance procedures, processes, and product lifecycle managementAbility to promote a team environment of creative innovationUnderstanding of CM | Vantage’s mission, philosophy, goals, and objectivesAbility to travel to meet with producers, brokers, vendors, and industry service organizations Necessary On‑the‑Job Training And Orientation Six months; by the end of this time, the employee must be able to function with minimum directionHowever, up to one year or more may be required before all aspects of the job are encountered Supervisory Responsibility None Interactions Company management and department personnelInsurance producers, outside vendors, research firms, governmental and regulatory agencies, and insurance industry service organizations Additional Explanatory Comments NOTE: The CM Group is made up of Church Mutual Insurance Company, S.I., CM Regent Insurance Company, CM Vantage Specialty Insurance Company, and CM Select Insurance Company.
