About the role

The Senior Underwriter for Northeast National Brokerage (NNB) will review applications for petroleum distribution insurance, evaluate risks, and determine coverage and pricing based on established underwriting guidelines. This senior-level position involves assessing excessive risks, ensuring profitable risk distribution, and becoming familiar with commercial insurance applications and industry terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to underwriting guidelines and execute underwriting and pricing strategies to maintain profitability goals.
  • Use level of authority to accept, reject, or mitigate risk for applications.
  • Approve or decline insurance applications within certain limits and issue coverage; prepare referral submissions for risks exceeding individual authority.
  • Review and analyze risk characteristics on insurance applications, renewals, and change requests for distribution of fuel classes (propane, heating oil, gas, diesel) to residences, gas stations, and other entities across the U.S.
  • Ensure underwriting activities comply with all industry and government regulations.
  • Document underwriting files, including risk analysis and pricing justification, in accordance with established standards.
  • Offer recommendations to clients to reduce exposure to excessive risk.
  • Utilize underwriting guidelines, rules, and standards to determine appropriate premiums, limits, and coverages.
  • Cultivate relationships with assigned producers to achieve production goals.
  • Collaborate closely with the underwriting team to finalize insurance applications efficiently.
  • Utilize multiple databases to gather and verify supplementary data for submissions and leverage specialized software for accurate policy pricing.
  • Respond to customer needs, providing tailored guidance and assistance.
  • Process accounts from approved quotes through to policy issuance with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Recommend ideas for program development and process improvement.
  • Assist in the development of the underwriting team through knowledge sharing, collaboration, and mentoring.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum 5 years of commercial P&C underwriting or related insurance experience.
  • Experience underwriting commercial E&S policies required.
  • Experience underwriting excess petroleum policies strongly preferred.
  • Experience working for an MGA preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to quickly learn industry-specific software.
  • Strong customer service experience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members and other departments.
  • Strong desire to learn, explore new ideas, and seek out new knowledge.
  • Ability to be flexible, embrace change, and pivot quickly in response to shifting priorities.

Qualifications

  • Experience using Vertafore, AIM, and ImageRight a plus.
  • CPCU, Property & Casualty Brokers License, or similar certifications a plus.

Pay

National pay range: $93,000 USD - $116,000 USD. Actual starting pay will be based on skills, qualifications, training, and experience.
