Senior Underwriter

About the role
The Senior Underwriting Specialist reviews accounts to determine acceptability within company underwriting authority, completes underwriting and pricing of accepted accounts, and prepares and submits accounts outside authority to the carrier. The role involves negotiating pricing and coverages, initiating and assisting sales staff with business development, and serving as the primary contact for agents and brokers. Additionally, the Specialist handles account problems and supports less experienced peers.
The primary objectives are to grow the specific program book of business profitably and develop relationships with key program production sources in conjunction with team leaders and other team members.
Responsibilities
- Underwrites new and renewal program business for acceptability based on company and Amwins Program Underwriters guidelines, including reviewing applications, coverages, classifications, exposures, financial condition, loss information, and engineering reports.
- Discusses pricing with producers, brokers, or agents; quotes accounts within authority.
- Works with the rating department to achieve pricing, terms, and conditions.
- Completes Account Summary detailing hazards, controls, coverages, terms, pricing, and thought process for each account.
- Maintains strong knowledge of ISO forms and rules.
- Submits accounts above authority to the underwriting manager and/or company.
- Sends out proposals and serves as the primary contact for agents and brokers, acting as the interface between the carrier and agents/brokers.
- Initiates new business development efforts with assigned agents.
- Sends out initial billing and binding acknowledgements.
- Requests policies to be issued and orders loss control in accordance with company guidelines; reviews completed reports and takes appropriate action.
- Handles coverage changes and policy form modifications in conjunction with the company.
- Coordinates with other department personnel, consulting engineering and claims to obtain necessary information.
- Responds to phone calls and emails in a timely fashion.
- Acts as a departmental resource, mentoring and answering technical and general questions from others in the department.
- Approves endorsements within authority and refers those outside authority.
- Completes rate change reports and quality reviews proposals and binding acknowledgements.
- Performs quarterly audits on peer files.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Four-year college degree and equivalent designation completed or in process with a goal to complete.
- Good oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with seasonal volume.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and a strong customer service commitment.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Insurance curriculum classes a plus.
Qualifications
- Minimum of five years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience.
- Prior experience underwriting program business, heavy auto, and/or property is a plus.
