About the role

This position offers the opportunity to apply and expand your knowledge of transmission line engineering, including conductors, hardware, insulation, structures, foundations, and electrical principles to design transmission lines in the 69kV to 500kV range. You will be responsible for cost analyses, development of design criteria, routing and siting of transmission lines, conductor selection studies, shielding, grounding, and induction studies. The role involves working with vendors and clients to specify transmission line components, interacting with a diverse client base, and collaborating with other project teams.

Occasional travel for site visits and client meetings is required. You will also develop proposals and cost estimates for new work. This role offers a hybrid work arrangement from our future Lexington, KY office, with an expectation to spend three days a week in the office. A generous relocation package is available, dependent upon your location.

Responsibilities

  • Design transmission lines in the 69kV to 500kV range, incorporating code requirements.
  • Perform cost analyses and develop design criteria for transmission line projects.
  • Conduct routing and siting of transmission lines, including conductor selection studies, shielding, grounding, and induction studies.
  • Specify transmission line components in collaboration with vendors and clients.
  • Verify and review right-of-way requirements, conductor sags/tensions, transmission line plan and profile drawings, and construction documents.
  • Develop proposals and cost estimates for new work.
  • Create and coordinate project schedules and budgets.
  • Prepare specifications for procurement of transmission line materials and construction.
  • Liaise with construction and installation teams.
  • Write and provide support documentation for engineering calculations.
  • Lead teams in using data, automation, and AI tools to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
  • Oversee engineers who use programming or scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.

Requirements

  • BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • 7 or more years of experience as a member of a project team on diverse transmission assignments, including transmission line design, cost estimate development, schedule creation, and coordination.
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD software to review transmission line models.
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of technical plans, drawings, and models.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NESC, IEC, CSA, IEEE, ANSI, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Willingness or ability to lead others in using modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows.

Qualifications (Valued but not required)

  • PE license.
  • Experience in developing engineering proposals and cost estimates.
  • Experience with scheduling.
  • Proficiency with any of the following programs: PLS-TOWER, SAG10, LPILE, MFAD, ArcGIS, CDEGS, AutoCAD, MicroStation.
  • Additional learning or experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields.

Pay

Compensation range: $100,019 - $152,807. Eligible positions may also participate in a yearly discretionary bonus.

Schedule

Hybrid work arrangement: Three days per week in the Lexington, KY office, with two days remote.
