Senior Traffic Signal Technician
About the role
The Transportation Department of the City of Durham Advance is seeking individuals to join their team. This position involves maintaining and repairing city property, vehicles, roads, and traffic systems, equipment, and facilities. It also includes providing custodial services, collecting, transporting, and disposing of municipal solid and yard waste. The role requires a broad range of technical work from routine to specialized skilled labor, technical repairs, or operation of heavy equipment.
Responsibilities
- Performs and/or assists with coordinating maintenance operations
- Installs, operates, and/or repairs vehicles, signs, networks, cameras, pumps, pipes, water lines, radio systems, and other devices and equipment at assigned facilities or sites
- Performs skilled plumbing, carpentry, concrete work, masonry, painting, and welding duties
- Inspects conditions of equipment, vehicles, signs, networks, cameras, radio systems, devices, and other materials at assigned facilities or sites
- Sets up work safe zones and detour routes; directs traffic; and addresses safety issues to detect and troubleshoot maintenance-related issues
- Operates light to heavy equipment, to include backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, front-end loaders, rollers, compactors, camera trucks, and flush trucks
- Prepares and maintains reports and records, performs data entry, receives and processes work orders and service requests, and updates work order systems and related databases
- Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned
- Leading staff in the installation, adjustment and repair of traffic signals
- Troubleshooting the fiber optic system
- Building electrical services to specification
- Responding to and resolving trouble calls
- Logging daily work events in writing and electronic format
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSet, TASC)
- Four years of equipment operation, or technical repair experience in areas related to assignment
- IMSA Traffic Signals Level I Certification
- NC Class A Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of hire
- Forklift Operators Certification within 6 months of hire
Qualifications
- Additional Preferred Skills:
- IMSA Traffic Signal Level II Certification
- Professional Operator Training for Insulated Aerial Devices and Digger Derrick
- Experience identifying opportunities for and/or performing preventative maintenance on equipment and systems
- Experience performing inventory of supplies and hardware and/or processing work orders for completion
- Experience with overseeing the installation and maintenance of underground conduit systems, outside cable plant, wiring systems and/or utility pole line hardware installations
Skills
Skills required for this position include equipment operation, technical repair, and installation of various devices and systems. Proficiency in handling heavy equipment and understanding traffic signals and fiber optic systems is essential.

Pay
Hiring Range: $49,737.00 - $60,478.00
Schedule
Workdays/Hours: 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. / Tuesday - Friday
