Primary Function
The Senior Field Service Technician is a crew-level leader responsible for directing all aspects of field testing, commissioning, and maintenance operations across high-voltage substations and power systems. This role carries full accountability for crew performance, project quality, safety compliance, and client satisfaction on assigned engagements.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee all field testing, commissioning, and maintenance activities on assigned projects, ensuring adherence to scope, schedule, quality, and safety standards.
- Lead and manage field crews of multiple technicians across concurrent testing and commissioning engagements.
- Serve as the primary client-facing representative in the field, maintaining professional communication and alignment of expectations throughout the project lifecycle.
- Plan and coordinate daily work activities, crew assignments, and resource allocation to maximize productivity and project efficiency.
- Perform and direct the execution of all levels of electrical testing including insulation resistance, contact resistance, turns ratio, power factor, hi-pot, circuit breaker timing, cable fault location, protective relay testing, and full system commissioning.
- Direct and oversee testing and commissioning of all power apparatus including power transformers, current transformers, potential transformers, medium- and high-voltage circuit breakers, and switchgear assemblies.
- Direct and oversee testing, commissioning, and maintenance of low-voltage AC/DC station auxiliary systems including station batteries, battery chargers, inverters, DC distribution panels, AC distribution systems, and voltage regulation controls.
- Exercise expert-level technical judgment to diagnose complex equipment issues, resolve testing anomalies, and direct root cause analysis.
- Develop and review switching orders, test procedures, and commissioning plans for assigned projects.
- Conduct and lead Job Safety Task Analyses (JSTAs), daily safety briefings, and safety stand-down meetings; enforce all safety procedures and protocols.
- Investigate and report on incidents, near-misses, and safety observations in accordance with company protocols.
- Review and approve all test reports, commissioning documentation, and quality deliverables produced by assigned crew members.
- Provide formal mentorship, training, and performance feedback to Field Service Technicians at all levels; support onboarding of new field personnel.
- Coincide with Project Managers, Engineering, and the Field Supervisor to resolve technical issues, manage scope changes, and maintain project momentum.
- Represent the company in a QA/QC role, ensuring all work meets internal standards and client specifications.
- Support proposal and estimating teams with technical input on testing scope, crew requirements, durations, and equipment needs for project pursuits.
- Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.

Required Minimum Qualifications / Experience
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field; equivalent field technician experience may be considered in lieu of a degree (2 years for Associate’s, 4 years for Bachelor’s).
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in high-voltage electrical testing and commissioning, with demonstrated crew leadership or senior technician capability.
- Expert-level knowledge of all areas of electrical testing and commissioning, including power factor testing, hi-pot testing, cable fault location, protective relay calibration and testing, circuit breaker testing, power transformer testing, station auxiliary systems, and full system commissioning.
- Prominent ability to lead, manage, and develop field crews across multiple concurrent testing and commissioning engagements.
- Advanced ability to read and interpret complex electrical drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and protection schemes.
- Strong technical report writing and review skills with the ability to approve comprehensive commissioning documentation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present technical information to clients, project leadership, and executive management.
- Mathematical proficiency through trigonometry.
- Thorough knowledge of safety and health regulations applicable to high-voltage electrical work, including NFPA 70E and OSHA standards.
- Strong interpersonal skills and professional demeanor with the ability to represent Dashiell in client-facing interactions.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record; willingness to travel extensively, including overnight stays.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
- TWIC card or ability to obtain one.
Preferred Experience
- With Doble, Megger, Omicron, or similar test equipment platforms.
- Prior experience in electric utility T&D construction or industrial commissioning environments.
- Experience with SCADA systems, power line carrier, infrared thermography, and phasing and loading verification.
- Project management training or certification (e.g., PMP, CAPM).
