Work you will do
- Configuration of payroll wage codes for the accurate application of employer and employee taxes and social security
- Analysis of payroll tax notices
- Preparation of Powers of Attorney
- Liaison with Federal and State Agencies
- Registration of employers for payroll taxes
- Preparation and filing of payroll tax returns
- Preparation of Forms W-2, Forms 1099 and state equivalents
- Perform regular audits to identify and resolve compliance issues, avoiding delays in filings and monitoring penalties/notices.
- Work in partnership with clients to ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll tax liabilities.
- Reconcile federal and state withholding taxes and unemployment taxes monthly, quarterly, and annually.
- Apply for identification numbers, such as FEIN and SUI, when entering new jurisdictions.
- Evaluate and improve payroll tax processes for higher efficiency and accuracy.
- Lead implementation efforts related to payroll taxes.
- Cook up year-end efforts to ensure accurate W-2s and other annual tax filings.
- Ensure proper setup and maintenance of local withholding codes for employers and employees in the Deloitte payroll tax system.
- Good knowledge on Tax State/SUI agency portals.
- Perform quarterly reconciliation and data analysis.
- Reconcile payroll taxes at the employee level.
- Tax Adjustment & Amendment knowledge.
- Play a lead role in Year-End processing for accurate W-2.
- Communicate directly with internal/external customers regarding tax inquiries.
- Research and resolve payroll tax inquires.
- Ensure that all tax related updates in the payroll system are fully reviewed and understood.
- Perform internal audits as requested.
- Identify and resolve issues as well as drive change for related improvements.
- Set up the required operating protocols for the service offering.
Qualifications
- Ability to perform job responsibilities within a hybrid work model that requires US Tax professionals to co-locate in person 2 - 3 days per week
- Bachelor's degree in economics, human resources, international business, finance, accounting, or relevant discipline
- 3+ years of experience in U.S. payroll tax operations and compliance, including employer registrations, payroll tax return preparation and filing, tax notice analysis, quarterly and annual reconciliations, tax adjustments/amendments, and year-end reporting such as Forms W-2 and 1099.
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax requirements and agency processes, including withholding and unemployment tax setup, FEIN/SUI registration, Powers of Attorney, agency correspondence, and audit support.
- Experience using payroll tax systems and agency portals to manage tax configurations, validate tax updates, reconcile employee-level tax data, resolve client and stakeholder inquiries, and identify process improvement or automation opportunities with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Limited immigration sponsorship may be available.
- Ability to travel up to 10%, on average, based on the work you do and the clients and industries/sectors you serve.
- One of the following active accreditations obtained, in process, or willing and able to obtain: Licensed CPA in state of practice/primary office if eligible to sit for the CPA, Certified Payroll Professional (CPP), Enrolled Agent, Juris Doctor (JD).
- Preferred proficiency with payroll software (e.g., ADP, Workday, Paycom) and Microsoft Excel.
