Primary Purpose
Ensures compliance with all applicable tax regulations and supports strategic tax planning initiatives. Manages tax reporting, research, and analysis to minimize risk and optimize tax strategies while upholding the institution’s mission and financial integrity.
Essential Job Functions
- Responsible for semi-annual federal and state Foreign Gift and Contract reporting, including collaboration with university departments to obtain foreign-sourced gifts and contracts, reviewing documentation for legal compliance, and preparing and filing reports.
- Reviews and determines independent contractor requests for appropriate worker classification.
- Determines tax implications, calculation of imputed income, and tax reporting for various fringe benefits; consults with Human Resources and Payroll.
- Manages nonresident alien tax withholding and reporting, including review of AP payment requests for withholding and/or tax treaty eligibility.
- Determines tax implications for various people payments related to grants, business expenses, fellowships, prizes, and awards.
- Performs technical tax research and documents conclusions via tax memorandums.
- Monitors changes in tax laws and assesses their impact on the institution.
- Advises on tax implications of new programs, grants, and business activities.
- Develops and implements tax compliance procedures, best practices, and internal controls.
- Partners with departments to provide guidance on tax-related issues for contracts, payroll, and procurement.
- Assists with the preparation and filing of federal, state, and local tax returns, including income and sales/use tax.
- Ensures compliance with IRS regulations, state statutes, and higher education-specific tax requirements.
- Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience working in tax, legal, regulatory compliance, or policy advisory roles involving analysis and interpretation of international, federal, and/or state laws.
Qualifications
- Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of federal and state tax regulations, fringe benefits, non-resident alien tax rules, and worker classification.
- Proficiency in tax software and ERP systems.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to conduct tax research and effectively communicate tax implications to non-tax stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Excel and Word.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Tax, JD, or LLM.
- CPA certification.
- Experience with IRS Form 990 and related schedules.
- Familiarity with tax issues unique to higher education institutions.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex organizational environment.
