Amazon's Data Center Engineering organization, within the Controls Design eXecution (CDX) org, is seeking a Senior Systems Development Engineer (SysDE) to join our Mechanical Controls development team. You will design, develop, deploy, and scale control systems software on the CODESYS platform that runs the mechanical infrastructure of AWS data centers, ensuring facilities remain cool, efficient, and reliable.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain mechanical control systems software on the CODESYS (IEC 61131-3) PLC platform for AWS data center infrastructure.
- Develop and refine control logic, function blocks, and Sequences of Operations (SOO) to meet performance and reliability requirements across varied site types and equipment vendors.
- Perform triage, root-cause analysis, and remediation of control system issues.
- Support first-of-kind builds, including occasional on-site travel (approximately 15%) for real-time break/fix support and field validation.
- Partner with electrical controls counterparts, Controls Design Engineering, Field Engineering, and other Data Center Engineering teams to develop next-generation controllers.
- Document control system designs, configurations, and sequences of operation.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of controls development standards and tooling.
- Participate in an on-call rotation for critical control system issue escalation support.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience developing, debugging, and maintaining PLC-based control systems, including CODESYS platform expertise (Structured Text, Function Block Diagram, or other IEC 61131-3 languages).
- 4+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
- 4+ years of designing or architecting systems (design patterns, reliability, scaling) for new and existing systems.
- 4+ years of systems development in an IT or data center environment.
- 4+ years of deploying and operating in a Linux/Unix environment.
- 2+ years of programming with modern languages (C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading complex software or computing infrastructure projects successfully delivered to customers.
- Ability to work proactively and independently, meet deadlines, and deliver on projects.
- Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), industrial protocols (Modbus, BACnet, EtherCAT), and IPC/PAC/PLC hardware.
- Experience developing control logic for mechanical systems (air handling units, chilled water systems, liquid cooling, pumps, VFDs, etc.).
