Senior Surgical Clinical Reviewer

This position is primarily a remote work-from-home opportunity within UChicago Medicine’s Office of External Assessments.

About the role

The Senior Surgical Clinical Reviewer ensures reliable data is collected and submitted to the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). Responsibilities include high-quality data compilation, documentation, and entry into the ACS NSQIP database for all eligible surgeries. The role oversees the Adult and Pediatric NSQIP programs, collaborates with surgeon champions and the Department of Surgery to identify clinical quality improvement opportunities, and facilitates reviews, data aggregation, analysis, and reporting using accepted methodologies.

Responsibilities

• Maintains the Adult NSQIP and Pediatric NSQIP programs, providing leadership and project coordination.
• Facilitates meetings to ensure Program requirements are met.
• Identifies surgical patients for inclusion in the Program using inclusion/exclusion criteria and protocols.
• Oversees collection of preoperative, operative, and postoperative data through hospital medical record systems.
• Demonstrates appropriate resource utilization to obtain valid, reliable data for the Program.
• Identifies process improvement opportunities in data collection.
• Ensures applicability of methodology and reliability of definitions through Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) testing.
• Uses software applications for data collection and analysis.
• Ensures accurate and timely data entry into the Program’s database, meeting caseload accrual requirements.
• Evaluates proposed state, regional, or national collaboratives and quality improvement projects for feasibility, clinical importance, and resource needs.
• Fulfills NSQIP data requests for internal and external reporting, collaborating with the Center for Research Informatics (CRI) for IRB requests and deidentified reports.
• Ensures postoperative contact with patients and/or families via phone or written communication.
• Reports NSQIP data to the Perioperative Quality Committee and Comer Safety and Quality Committee.
• Identifies opportunities for clinical quality improvement and prepares reports for relevant groups (e.g., M&M, infection control, quality management).
• Participates in process improvement initiatives related to clinical quality.
• Oversees auditing of surgery cases for quality improvement, working with clinical departments and HIM to correct errors and omissions.
• Serves as an educational resource on ACS NSQIP for internal and external audiences by developing materials and delivering presentations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Minimum three years’ experience as a Surgical Clinical Reviewer.
• Must take and pass the annual ACS NSQIP Adult and Pediatric SCR Certification Exams.
• Completion of NSQIP training modules and certification examination required within three months of hire.
• Knowledge of quality improvement/patient safety principles, including methodologies, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Ability to work in a time-oriented environment and build relationships to gain clinical support.
• Excellent interpersonal, presentation, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Professional and courteous interaction with all members of the surgical team and administrative staff.
• Computer and internet proficiency, with familiarity and comfort using MS Office products.
• Strong analytical skills and basic statistical knowledge.

Preferred Qualifications

• RHIA, RHIT, RN, or BSN preferred.
• Database data entry and/or management experience preferred.

Schedule

• Full-Time (1.0 FTE).
• Day shift.
• Primarily remote work-from-home.

Pay

The pay range reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected for the position, based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and current market data. Compensation at hire will vary based on candidate qualifications, experience, and organizational considerations, such as internal equity.
