Senior Surety Underwriter - Small to Mid Contract (Florida)
About the role
Liberty Mutual Surety™ is recruiting for a Senior Surety Underwriter to join our Small to Mid-Contract Team in the Southeast Surety Plus’s Florida Branch. As a Senior Surety Underwriter, you will develop and underwrite profitable surety business, and service independent agents, brokers, and small to mid-sized contract accounts within an assigned territory. You will build and maintain positive partnerships with agents, brokers, and accounts as a trusted advisor and underwriting resource. This role involves performing primary credit underwriting and financial/risk analysis, providing recommendations, and making decisions on new and existing accounts.

If the selected candidate lives within 50 miles of a GRS office, they should be prepared to come into the office two days/week, subject to change. This position is posted as a Senior Surety Underwriter, but we will consider candidates at various levels of experience.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite and negotiate contract/SBA accounts to maximize profitability while minimizing risk, including complex accounts based on role level.
- Make thorough evaluations and assessments of a customer’s financial, technical, organizational, and management capacities, including experience, objectives, and subjective judgment of character.
- Manage the profitability and retention of an assigned book of business while developing the portfolio through strong relationships with agents and brokers.
- Perform analytical evaluations of financial statements on both a static and trend basis, monitoring financial risk through quarterly statements and work-in-progress data.
- Stay abreast of Liberty Mutual Surety and Global Risk Solutions product lines and identify/promote opportunities with agents and brokers.
- Investigate, analyze, and manage underwriting, accounting, and workflow issues within Surety policies and procedures.
- Assess and identify changes in business aspects, including work programs, financial criteria, risk nature, data flow accuracy, and exposure analyses; coordinate issues with Home Office Underwriters and Field Management.
- Assist in evaluating business continuity arrangements and funding mechanisms (e.g., adequacy of life insurance) to preclude financial drain in case of owner demise or insurable loss.
- Mentor junior staff based on role level.
- Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Degree in Business or equivalent, typically required.
- A minimum of 2.5 years, typically 3 or more years, of surety underwriting experience and/or other related experience.
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks, including competence with all phases of the underwriting process and proficiency in qualitative and quantitative tools.
- Demonstrated comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and capability to define and implement necessary underwriting and administrative processes.
- Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable Surety business.

Pay
The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. The full salary range reflects competitive labor market value and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles may include commission and/or bonus earnings based on multiple factors outlined in the compensation plan.
