About the role
Mesa Associates, Inc. is seeking a Senior Protection and Controls (P&C) Engineer with at least 8 years of experience to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, checking, and oversight of deliverables associated with high voltage substation design projects, both in renewables and for utility clients. This role involves high-level design tasks and/or checking of deliverables created by other engineers.
Responsibilities
- Design, check, and oversee deliverables associated with high voltage substation design projects.
- Create single line diagrams, control house layouts, panel front views, elementary and/or schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, communications diagrams, nameplate drawings, bills of materials, and cable schedules.
- Prepare construction specifications.
- Complete assignments within budget and schedule with a high degree of accuracy.
- Evaluate, select, and apply engineering principles and practices relevant to the project requirements.
- Define project objectives, prepare design estimates, and define project requirements and design approaches for large or complex projects.
- Determine design approach and work with the design team to prepare required design documents (e.g., drawings, specifications, calculations, etc.).
- Conceptualize the initial design approach for a major phase of a large project, or have overall responsibility for the engineering work on a routine project.
- Perform technical and coordination checking of deliverables and other project documents to ensure compliance with IEEE and/or client standards and meet applicable design requirements.
Requirements
Must have:
- A Professional Engineer (PE) License.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills, and the ability to convey technical knowledge in simple and practical language.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have:
- At least 8 years of experience in protection and controls engineering.
- Experience with high voltage substation design projects, both in renewables and for utility clients.
- Knowledge of IEEE and/or client standards.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Skills
Desired skills include:
- Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar drafting software.
- Experience with electrical systems and substation design.
- Strong understanding of electrical codes and regulations.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
