Senior Substation Design Engineer

About the role

Design electrical systems for industrial and government facilities, including substations, distribution systems, and industrial power systems.

Responsibilities

  • Develop substation physical designs, including bus configurations and grounding systems.
  • Design electrical distribution systems and industrial power systems.
  • Perform electrical calculations, studies, sketches, diagrams, and working drawings.
  • Perform building lighting and electrical load calculations.
  • Evaluate and recommend electrical equipment based on project requirements.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, installation, and operational testing.
  • Develop functional specifications and other project documentation.
  • Perform design reviews and quality control activities.
  • Support sales and estimating teams with specification reviews, bids, and RFP responses.
  • Support project management activities and customer communication.
  • Coordinate with Superintendents regarding project staffing and field requirements.
  • Manage change orders and support customer relationships.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers and technical staff.
  • Coordinate with Purchasing regarding preferred equipment, parts, and supplies.
  • Support company safety and quality control programs.
  • Participate in jobsite inspections and provide technical field support.
  • Support SCADA and control system design and integration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.
  • Active Electrical Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Minimum 10 years of senior-level electrical engineering experience specifically involving substation design.
  • Proven experience with substation physical design, including bus configurations, grounding grid design, and structural coordination.
  • Strong knowledge of high voltage equipment including power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, CTs, PTs, and GSUs.
  • Knowledge of protection and control systems, relay coordination studies, and protective relay settings.
  • Familiarity with IEC 61850, DNP3, or similar substation automation protocols.
  • Strong knowledge of IEEE, NESC, and utility-specific design standards.
  • Knowledge of transmission and distribution voltage classes.
  • Experience with CADD or BIM design software.
  • Experience with electrical lighting calculation software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Proven leadership and project management experience.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in the United States and pass required background screening.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing short circuit studies.
  • Load flow analysis experience.
  • Arc flash studies.
  • Transient stability studies.
  • SCADA integration experience.
  • Experience with industrial power systems up to high voltage transmission levels.
  • Utility substation design experience.
