Position Summary

We are currently seeking a Senior Structural Engineer / Project Manager to join our multi-discipline team. You will deliver structural design for high-impact inland navigation, coastal protection, and civil works structures — including locks, dams, gates, waterfront structures, ports, hydropower, flood risk reduction, and fish passage facilities. In this role you will partner with national industry leaders and local experts on large, high-visibility projects for strategic clients (including the USACE and other Northwest public agencies). As a Project Manager, you will lead interdisciplinary design teams, drive creative, community-focused solutions, and play a central role in shaping impactful projects. This position offers excellent opportunities for both technical growth and visible leadership across a diverse portfolio of complex infrastructure work.

Essential Job Functions

  • Lead and manage complex, multi-discipline infrastructure projects including civil works (flood protection, navigation locks, dam structures), waterfront structures, and pump stations.
  • Provide hands-on project management and oversight of project execution by delivering projects on time, within scope, and on budget while exceeding client expectations.
  • Perform structural design and analysis for new, replacement, and existing structures using hand calculations and finite element analysis for reinforced concrete and structural steel systems.
  • Design and analyze structures to meet project-specific and code requirements utilizing both hand and finite element analysis. Experience with seismic analysis is desirable.
  • Lead the development of complete engineering calculation packages and clear, well-organized technical documentation.
  • Tackle complex engineering challenges by selecting, adapting, and innovating standard methods and, when appropriate, developing new solutions.
  • Champion project quality through a robust QA/QC process and proactive technical reviews.
  • Prepare clear, constructible contract documents, including plans, specifications, reports, and addenda.
  • Produce and review technical reports and client deliverables with a focus on clarity and actionable recommendations.
  • Work closely with business development teams to pursue new opportunities: cultivate client relationships, scope projects, prepare compelling proposals and cost estimates, and support contract negotiations.
  • Drive client satisfaction and repeat business; collaborate with managers and technical experts to market services and recruit top talent.
  • Coordinate design solutions with clients, contractors, and internal disciplines through engaging presentations, design review meetings, and training.
  • Mentor and develop staff—set performance expectations, give constructive feedback, and foster an inclusive culture that supports career growth.
  • Consult with suppliers, fabricators, or contractors to interpret specifications and resolve technical challenges.

Requirements Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or structural engineering.
  • 15+ years of relevant structural engineering experience, including a proven track record of successful project management and delivery of civil works or water-related structural projects.
  • An active Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
  • Demonstrated expertise in reinforced concrete and structural steel design, detailing, and preparation of construction documents (plans, details, specifications).
  • A proven ability to lead multi-discipline engineering teams to produce high-quality drawings, calculations, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Significant business development experience: identifying opportunities, leading capture efforts, and preparing persuasive proposals (experience with on call/IDIQ contracts preferred).
  • Proficiency with advanced structural analysis/FEA software such as SAP2000, ANSYS, LPILE, or comparable tools. Comfortable with Microsoft Office; familiarity with CADD/BIM workflows is desired.
  • Experience consulting with suppliers, fabricators, or contractors to interpret specifications and resolve technical challenges.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills; confidence in presenting to clients and stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; able to work independently and collaboratively in person and virtually.
  • Passion for mentoring and developing technical staff and for making decisions that advance company goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in structural engineering or related field.
  • Experience with USACE or other federal/local government clients and contracting processes is a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel for meetings, conferences, site visits, and shop fabrication visits as needed. Travel is estimated to be up to 20% yearly (occasional overnight travel).
  • Ability to stand or walk for long periods during site visits, including the ability to kneel, crouch, or stoop.
  • Ability to walk up stairs and climb ladders.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions (heat, rain, wind, cold) for extended periods.
  • Ability to sit at a workstation and use a computer for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours/day). Additional hours may be required based on project needs.
  • Manual dexterity to use a computer mouse, keyboard, and other tools.
  • Visual acuity to read and interpret detailed drawings and technical documents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in-person and via electronic means.
