This position is responsible for providing deep structural technical expertise, ensuring quality and integration standards are met, and providing technical mentoring to others on the structural engineering team.
About the Role
The Senior Structural Engineer position reports administratively to both the Studio Director and the Director of Engineering, with day-to-day task assignments by the Structural Team Leader. This position independently leads structural planning, designing, engineering, and construction document production and is responsible for the overall quality of the technical output of their discipline. This individual will be directly involved in maintaining and growing client relationships as a structural engineering expert.
Responsibilities
- Manage structural engineering on projects from Design Basis through specifications and submittals, communicating project objectives, problems, solutions, and scope changes to clients, field personnel, and internal staff.
- Provide structural technical leadership and ensure quality and the highest level of structural engineering services to external and internal clients.
- Teach and mentor others in subject matter expertise, including knowledge of building codes, regulations, requirements, building materials, construction methods, and procedures for project work.
- Facilitate close work with clients, field personnel, and internal staff to achieve deadlines and quality work.
- Work well in a team/collaborative setting, manage information flow, and look for ways to improve project-related processes.
- Stamp/seal self-produced documents, work with modest supervision and guidance, direct drafting to support structural design, organize and prioritize personal workload, and make necessary adjustments to meet deadlines.
- Contribute to junior team member skill advancements via coaching and/or mentoring.
- Absorb and analyze project scope to assist in authoring proposals and contracts, and nurture positive relationships with existing clients and partners through project work.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Architectural/Civil Engineering from an accredited institution with an emphasis or specific training in structural engineering for building environments.
- Master’s degree in Civil Engineering is not mandatory, but recommended.
- A Professional Engineer (PE) license is required, SE license is a plus.
- Ten or more years of structural engineering experience.
- Experience with steel and concrete design is required; masonry and wood experience are a plus.
- Established track record of complete structural system design for buildings.
- Experience in one or more of higher education, corporate/commercial, and industrial facilities is preferred, but not required.
- Ability to make independent decisions within a general framework, demonstrate exceptional planning, analytical, and problem-solving skills, and function effectively in a demanding environment.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of building codes, regulations, requirements, building materials, construction methods, and procedures for project work.
- Ability to manage the proper sequencing of construction documents.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook), specialized structural engineering software (e.g., RAM Software, RISA, etc.), and Revit experience is preferred.
