Senior Structural Designer | Fairfax, VA
Principal Responsibilities
- Lead design efforts for the analysis of structural systems;
- Utilize engineering software and tools to create detailed designs, specifications, and calculations according to code requirements and IMEG standards;
- Perform site assessments and generate detailed analysis and technical reports;
- Interact with clients to understand their needs, gather project requirements, and communicate technical information effectively;
- Build and maintain client relationships through professional communication;
- Provide in-process design reviews of structural system design, calculations, specifications, and project correspondence;
- Implement IMEG quality control processes to ensure that engineering designs and solutions meet IMEG quality standards, industry standards and client requirements;
- Provide technical training and mentoring;
- Provide technical assistance in resolution of field issues with limited support from senior staff;
- Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in structural engineering;
- Contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG;
- Prioritize safety in all aspects of engineering work;
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including other engineers, architects, and project managers, to deliver integrated solutions that meet project goals;
- Participate in project interviews and project presentations.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Advanced proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications;
- Advanced proficiency in technical and analytical skills including proficiency of principles in mechanics and materials, load paths, design techniques, design standards including steel, concrete, wood, masonry, and concepts involved in structural systems of buildings and structures;
- Strong training, mentoring and leadership skills;
- Ability to perform final quality control check in their area of expertise;
- Ability to sell work and develop client relationships;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups;
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrate team building skills;
- Eagerness to adapt to new challenges;
- Proficient with MS Office Suite including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook;
- Ability to travel up to 20% with occasional overnight stays.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering, or equivalent, required;
- Master’s Degree (MS) in Structural Engineering preferred;
- 7 years of experience minimum required, 8 preferred, in the building design consulting industry OR Associates degree, or certificate, in Building Information Modeling (BIM) or Engineering preferred;
- 11 years of experience minimum required, 12 preferred, in the building design consulting or construction industry.
Physical Requirements
- Sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds;
- Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull;
- Have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises.
Project Management Path
- Coordinate, oversee and manage projects ranging in size and complexity;
- Aid Project Executives and Client Executives with design scopes of work and fee calculations for proposal generation as well as with contract reviews;
- Create project schedules including targets for milestones and deadlines;
- Serve as the point of contact for teams and clients;
- Create monthly billings and submit financial information to Accounting in a timely manner; Update billing projections and estimated completion percentage for all projects monthly;
- Ensure design follows owner standards and requirements, IMEG standards and code requirements;
- Ensure design milestone deliverables are achieved, IMEG and client quality control processes are completed, and construction technical support occurs in a timely manner;
- Collaborate with design staff and coordinate scheduling of projects during all phases of design and construction;
- Schedule and lead progress meetings and provide meeting documentation.
