Senior Stormwater Engineer

About the Role

Michael Baker International is seeking a Stormwater Engineer to support the continued growth of our Alexandria Civil Engineering & Environmental (CEE) practice—which has experienced over 80% growth in the past two years. This role is ideal for a technical leader with strong expertise in stormwater, and hydrology & hydraulics (H&H), who is passionate about delivering high-quality work and mentoring high-performing teams. You’ll bring a balance of technical leadership, project delivery experience, and a collaborative mindset, while contributing to both local initiatives and broader regional and national programs.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a senior technical leader for stormwater and water resources projects
• Lead and support stormwater design efforts across multiple projects
• Help grow local water resources practice while contributing to regional and national initiatives
• Manage project scope, schedule, and budget while coordinating multidisciplinary teams
• Provide mentorship and guidance to junior and mid-level engineers
• Support proposal development and technical pursuits
• Build and maintain relationships with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders
• Ensure high-quality deliverables through strong QA/QC practices

Project Experience

• Hydrologic & hydraulic (H&H) modeling and analysis to inform data-driven planning
• Pond retrofits, green infrastructure, and low impact development (LID)
• Flood modeling and mitigation strategies
• Stormwater management (SWM) and BMP design, including inspections for environmental compliance
• Pedestrian trail design and park retrofits to enhance community access
• Site design and site assessments to support sustainable land use
• Erosion stabilization and utility system improvements
• Stream restoration/rehabilitation (preferred but not required)

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field
• 15+ years of progressive experience in water resources engineering with a focus on stormwater, and H&H modeling
• Proven experience leading technical analysis and design for stormwater and flood mitigation projects
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required
• Virginia PE preferred (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
• Maryland PE is a plus

Skills

• Advanced experience with H&H modeling tools (HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SWMM, PondPack, CivilStorm, or similar)
• Strong knowledge of stormwater system design and analysis
• Experience with floodplain studies, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies
• Familiarity with drainage design, watershed planning, and erosion/sediment control
• Understanding of regulatory permitting (Section 401/404, VPDES)
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D
• Experience developing plans, reports, and technical specifications
• Stream/ecological restoration and natural channel design (preferred but not required)
• Experience managing complex, multidisciplinary projects
• Strong ability to mentor and develop staff
• Excellent client-facing communication skills
• Experience supporting proposals and technical approaches
• Ability to build and maintain client relationships

Pay

The approximate salary range for this position is $121,803 – $191,856. This range represents a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will depend on experience, skillset, education, and location.
